Horace Clarke played second base. Danny Cater first. Gene The Stick Michaels shortstop, Celerino Sanchez third base, Jake Gibbs, catcher. Roy White in left. Bobby Murcer in centerfield, and Frank Terepedino in rightfield. Yankees perennial cellar dwellers in the late 60s, early 70s. Where were all the Yankee fans then?

Well, I think that many Yankee "fans" are largely posers who don't really follow the team--not even by reading the sports page or catching highlights. While this is true, I'm sure, for some in NYC proper, the suburban fan is more removed from the day in, day out doings of the team.

To answer your question a bit more simply, I think many NJ and CT Yankee "fans" think that to follow a successful team means to put on a Jeter t-shirt and say "Let's go Yanks. So when do they play? Wait, you mean they don't play in the winter? Since when!"

Because New York fans who liuve there actually know about the team, those from out of town are just on the band wagon and follow what ever trend it is.
