It's not. It's a SYMBOL of love because it's considered by many to be the perfect flower. Perfect form, perfect scent, fragile like love, bears thorns like love.

Symbol. Signs are different. For instance, a temperature of 105 degrees F is evidence, or a sign, of a fever. A profile of a woman wearing a skirt is a sign that this is a women's rest room. Symbols are more complex. Red roses have been used to symbolize love for thousands of years because the rose was the flower of Aphrodite (and Venus), the Greek and Roman goddess es of love. Roses are like labia in that they are soft, fragrant and voluptuous. Love is like a rose because although it is beautiful it can also cause pain, like the thorns. Linda Ronstadt had a great song: "Love is a rose but you better not pick it/ It only grows when it's on the vine/ Handful of thorns and you know you've missed it/ Use your love when you say the word "Mine."

Red roses are the traditional symbol for love and romance. The modern red rose we are now familiar with was introduced to Europe from China in the 1800's. However, the meanings associated with them can be traced back many centuries, even to some of the earliest societies. The color red itself evolved from an early primal symbol for life into a metaphor for deep emotion. In Greek and Roman mythology the red rose was closely tied to the goddess of love. Many early cultures used red roses to decorate marriage ceremonies and they were often a part of traditional wedding attire. Through this practice, the red rose became known as a symbol for love and fidelity. As the tradition of exchanging roses and other flowers as gifts of affection came into prevalence, the red rose naturally became the flower of choice for sending the strongest message of love. This is a tradition that has endured to the present day.
