The best way would be to take a class or find a private Russian teacher. Depending on your personal needs teacher would be more able to help you more effectively . Depending on your ability to study the languages and how fast you want to learn the language you can either go to college or take an immersion course.

There are a lot of colleges and language schools that offer Russian classes.

In addition you can also use on line language courses and/or CDs.

The best way would be to take a course with a Russian teacher. The Russian alphabet is quite different from ours so there is the first hard thing to learn and the other thing is of course how to pronounce and learn to talk. I´m quite sure a person cannot learn Russian by him/herself. But good luck, I think it´s a good thing to learn a language that not so many others speak. Can give you fine opportunities for example in the business world.

Go to a Russian neighborhood and find a young friend, preferably a friend who can't speak English well. That's the best way of learning Russian. Russian language changes very fast, it has tons of new expressions that emerged just within the last few years. It has a lot of slang expressions (for example, the prison slang has become very popular lately) , a lot of words borrowed from other languages and a lot of meaningless expressions that convey just a feeling. You will never be able to learn it without being in touch with someone who grew up there.

Tapes. I still can't get those Russian phrases out of my head. They should say the English before or after the Russian. It's too bad they don't go much beyond first year Russian or I would be in heaven.

Go to an intensive Russian language program, live in Russia for a while and fall in love with a Russian-speaking person. ;)
