in sept, the generals will be on tv claiming the 'surge' has achieved 75% of its goals, so another few months are required to filfill their mission. in dec, they will claim large areas of baghdad pacified, though over 400 americans have died since summer. In feb 2008 they will claim more iraqi units are able to carry out operations, they just need another smaller surge and six more months. In august 2008, over 1500 americans will have died since jan, and victory is around the corner. In jan 09, the same thing will be going on. That's what you get when you rely on a government led by morons

Probably never, even if they do win. Having Iraq surrounded on three sides (Iraq, Afghanistan and the sea) is tempting. I think next years would be the first possibility. It's really all about training and equipping the Iraqi forces and the government has achieved about have of that goal.

This level is here to stay until we begin withdrawing. Army will attempt to maintain these troops levels as long as they can and other services are donating non-essential troops to fill up slots.
