What's the difference between the "Interests and Activities" and the "Hobbies" section?

Resume writing does not have a true set of rules. Those things are probably the same, or at least interchangeable.

I wouldn't even include that stuff. It's just fluff. You should focus on building your accomplishments/duties at other positions into a group of attractive skill sets to provide to another employer.

Remember, a resume is supposed to be a "tease". In other words don't give too many details, just enough to make the perspective employer curious and want to interview you to get the whole story. Interests are things you are interested in, activities are what you do, hobbies are what you do to relax or unwind, like wood carving, building models, photography etc.

Interests and Activities are things you do when you can. Hobbies are thing you do on a regular basis. I would recommend lumping them together on your resume though.

I wouldn't put either on a professional resume. If you're just out of college, then Interests and Activities might be appropriate, but other than that, don't do it.

Not much. Interests & Activities could include associations & clubs. But don't use "hobbies" - no employer cares about that.

Under Interests you might put research interests, such as algorithm optimization and natural language processing. Under activities you might write your conference participation.

Hobbies might be more personal.

There is no need for all three of those on your resume. In fact a resume with all those on there would look horrible. Keep it to one of those.

Some employers ask because they want to know what you spend your spare time on. Reading is good to put down and volunteer work. They like that. Plus it shows them that you spend your time wisely. It's just to see what kind of character you are Know what I mean? Depends of the type of work your applying for.
