I don't believe you are seeing the verse for what it is saying.. Mankind in all their wisdom is foolishness when compared to the wisdom of God... And you say that Christians are ignorant... Jim

Doesn't really limit me from anything I really want to think about anyway.

The wisdom you're talking about is wisdom of the "world" Let me set up an example. In the 70's, as the divorce rate was increasing, worldly wisdom suggested that it would be wise to live together before marriage so that the couple can see if they are really compatible. Now, that seems reasonable, logical, and wise. Why is it that people are divorcing after all? They must not have been compatible. Now, 30 some years later, with numbers being tallied over the years, we find that what seemed wise to the world, because I guarantee the church didn't encourage premarital cohabitation, was fallacious. Statistically, couples that live together before marriage, are twice as likely to get divorced as couples who didn't live together first. It does not seem reasonable that this is true, but it is. That's God's wisdom that seems foolishness to the world.

No, that refers to the "wisdom" of this world. You know, the educated idiots we're following. Actually not believing something is a closed door to thinking. An open mind believes all things, since everything seems to come true or get created eventually. Cynicism is almost not believing in anything. A scientist has to be unbiased, that's the scientific method. Science even is supposed to question itself so it's not a body of facts, but a method of inquiry which requires looking at the evidence and not what somebody told you, unless you test it. That's the genius of the Bible, it says "Try [test] all things, hold fast to what is fine." And "Test the inspired expression and see if they are from God." In this context, wether they are true or not. And "Know the truth and the truth will set you free." That leaders, teachers and preachers don't set you free is because religion has been used as an "opiate of the people." Science has been used to blow up things and so on.

I'm not Christian, so I don't know. But...

It seems to me that that phrase is saying something entirely different. I mean, obviously you think it says that ignorance is good, since that is what you want to see. But I think it really means that God, compared with wise people on Earth, is just completely out of their league. Or, rather, you might be wise but that's nothing compared to God... compared to him you might as well be a fool. And the second phrase supports this idea quite well.

Mind you, I'm not Christian, this is the first time I've seen this phrase in my life, and I'm just speculating. I'm no expert, but that doesn't mean I can't have an opinion. Rather, it means I can only have an opinion.

Please don't assume that any religion inherently teaches wrong. That can only come from the followers -- and the ones you are thinking of are a very, very small minority.

Maybe back then but who in this time could afford to live even a modest life giving the way you are told to the church without education. We are not as student in control of the material we are taught what we are in control of is how we use it. I just had an experience with a class on a final assignment. I took an F in the class because I could not Do what was asked because of my teachings in church. Was it the right chooice for me at that time yes. I am retaking the course in the fall and will have guidance through the church.We are never going to be smarter than God but it is God who leads to where we go. If God puts it on you heart to go to school He already knows what is going to happen so the ignorance part is to ignore that which is not Biblical when you are through in my opinion.

It sure does seem that way at times, doesn't it? But there have been serious Christian scholars, lots of them, in the course of history. Back when almost every European was assumed to be a Christian (or face the Inquisition), even people like Galileo and DaVinci were Christian. Heck, even Darwin was a Christian at first, although he lost his faith when his beloved little daughter died.

Also, you must remember that there are many different flavors of Christianity. Some of them really do encourage scholarship, and run excellent universities and everything. Don't go judging them all by the Creationists; they are actually a minority among Christians, as far as I can tell.

You're not reading that verse in context:

"If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in God's sight. As it is written: "He catches the wise in their craftiness"; The Lord knows that the thoughts of the wise are futile."

The natural person's mind mainly thinks in terms of what it sees, feels, etc, and has garnered various human ideas. It simply can't understand spiritual things unless it is taught by God. But most people are arrogant, rely on their mind, and think they understand everything, but don't. So human wisdom (i.e without help from God) is foolishness to God. So people who think they are clever and knowing are too proud to listen to God, and so get caught out by their own pride, and miss God's salvation and wisdom.

Examine history and find the answer.

The Greeks were considered WISE.

As were the Eastern Asians.

These two groups would certainly have torn such a fraudulent religion to pieces by use of logic and analyses.
