I really want to get out on my new bike more often, but its been so dang hot out lately (in the 90s with high humidity). I try to go early in the morning or just before it gets dark, but that doesn't always work with my schedule.

Of course, I bring water with me, but is there anything else I should keep in mind if I am going to bike in the heat?

When riding in the heat,
1) if your bike has a bottle holder, use it to carry water, but not for drinking, but to cool you off. (pour the water over your head to cool the fastest)
2) get a camelpack for drinking, fill the pack with a mix of water and an sport drink. (strait water is OK for short rides)
3) wear light colors, and a helmet with a visor.
4) If you are riding and sweating this is good, when you stop sweating you are over heated and need to get out of the heat
other bad signs are, hot red or flushed dry skin, rapid pulse or difficulty breathing.
5) ride in the shade if you can.

I pour more water over my head than I drink. There's only so much water your stomach can absorb before you get sick, but as long as you keep your hair and skin wet you're still cooling.

Sunscreen, of course, and white shirt (some guys in TX wear a long sleeve white dress button-down type cotton shirt, when soaked it works pretty good. But the modern miracle fabrics are good too.

A lot of keeping cool is just mental attitude and getting adapted. And of course, very dark sunglasses.

There are some stuff you can do.

Find a jersey, tshirt or whatever that has the fabric to help to keep the sweat from you, and with light color (black is a no-no).

Well, you already have the most important, which is water. If possible, use a hydration backpack, you will probably drink more often smaller sips that if you have to stop to drink.

I just did a 3 hr. bike race the other day when it was around 95 degrees.

Drink lots of water, wear light colours, sunscreen, and try to avoid black helmets (i have one and it got ridiculously hot).
Sunglasses help too.

Most important is the water and sunscreen though.

If you don't wear a helmet, wear some kind of hat to keep the sun off your head. Wear white or very light colored clothes. You're doing the right thing by riding when the sun isn't at its hottest.
Good luck and keep on cycling. ☺
