That's really sad that the bride was a ***** about this. I know that the money is supposed to go towards the honeymoon and what not. I don't think the $ dance is so bad, because people have the option of doing it or not, and it's only a buck. At my husbands first wedding some friends "kidnapped" the bride and refused to let her go until people paid a certain amount of money. The bride didn't know this was going to happen and neither did my husband (the then groom). They were both pissed about it, but the friends all thought it was fun and refused to let the bride go. When my husband talks about it now, you can tell that it kind of ruined their wedding reception for them. Personally, I think it's a stupid idea. We didn't do the $ dance at our wedding, and if anyone had tried to "kidnap" me I would have had a tizzy fit. It's just plain rude.

I would have refused to may as well.
I cant stand the dollar dance, wishing well and other monetary traditions. I think they are dated and it makes the couple look greedy. I choose not to participate in these activities at weddings.
I think this is by far the worst I've heard of though. It's not just "well you can pay to dance with me if you want". It's "Pay money, or else!" How ridiculous. I've already bought you a gift, bought an outfit to wear to your wedding, paid a babysitter, gas is so expensive now and/or traveled by plane to get here and you want me to pay your "ransom"? Pul-lease.

I wouldn't have paid either! Attending a wedding generally means buying something to wear, a gift for the bridal shower. a money card at the reception, and occasionally a cash bar. There's no need to pull a stupid stunt like that to milk even MORE money from the guests. I can't believe that selfish bride had the balls to ask why you didn't pay!!! I'm appalled!

I think it's not a bad idea...just executed poorly. And I think it branches off a Russian tradition...where the groom has to do all sorts of activities and answer questions before the bridal party will let him see his bride, if he answers wrong he has to pay money. Personally I wouldn't pay either and it's wrong of the bride to be mad because a few people didn't pay up. But all in all it doesn't seem like a horrible thing.

I think it's ridiculously tacky. Honestly, by the time all of the guests get there, they have already bought a gift...to expect them to pay cash just to be able to party with the bride is inconsiderate, rude and tasteless.
I would have been sitting right next to you, refusing to pay. I would probably have said that I didn't bring any cash, considering I wasn't expecting to have to pay an admission fee.
Looks like she broke away from her kidnappers, eh?

I suggest hiring real "bride nappers" and seeing if anyone still pays the ransom after this ridiculous display of greed. What's next, a cover charge for the baby shower.

Wow. Pathetic. I would have left a that point honestly. I can't believe that she was gone for 2 hours. Being THAT money hungry that you'll withdrawal yourself from your family & friends at your own wedding reception. Good for you for not paying. That's just beyond rude. I've never heard of this happening, thankfully.

I've never heard of that, but it sounds ridiculous to me, and I definately wouldn't pay. If the brides ticked off that her friends/family--- who already bought her wedding gifts and came to her wedding--- didn't feel the need to give her MORE money, then she's just too damn greedy.

I've never even heard of that!! That's weird and kinda dramatic!! I think they were being silly but they shouldn't be MAD if some people chose not to participate. I mean, as a bridesmaid, you have to spend lots of money already so I would not have chipped in either!!!
