I'm 33 years old and I've wanted children my whole life but I'm missing one factor in it all. A man. I'm not sure about the whole sperm bank idea. I want to adopt but I'm not sure if I can. Are the laws different for different places? If so could someone let me know.

Thanks!

SURE! Try this website, www.adoptablekids.com
It's a great resource for people. I'd suggest the foster care system, it's a great way to adopt children who are already waiting for families.
The sperm bank idea isn't a bad one, you just have to be sure to get the entire medical history of the donor so you'll know what to expect - otherwise, the bank will be likely to just say everything is fine with the donor. It's a pretty easy process, and much quicker than waiting on a list for years. You really might want to reconsider. You could also ask a male friend to donate, that way you'll know the father...

Singles are permitted to adopt. Some states have laws against gays and lesbians adopting though even though they are single. I adopted my daughter internationally (China) because of the birth mother chosing a family for her child here is the states. I did not think my chances of being chosen were great given the majority of birthmothers are also single.

You can also go through foster care but the average age of children in foster care is 9 years old. Also there is no promise the child you foster will eventually be available for adoption. The goal in most cases is to reunify the birth family.

Some internation countries allow singles some don't but again not gays and lesbians are excluded in a lot of international adoptions as well.

There is no law regarding marriage status to adopt. Different agencies have different requirements, though, but it is almost unheard of now days for an agency to not work with single women. Of course, some birthmothers are not open to single adoptive parents, so you will need to consider your options in adopting. But then, all it takes is one birthmother, and there are many who are not only open to single moms, but occasionally request one.

Of course, to adopt as a single, you would need to make sure to have a great support system, male role models for the child, solid income and great child care if you work outside the home.

Other than that, all the requirements are the same!

FYI, stats show that children adopted by a single parent usually have high self esteem, higher I.Q., and are more verbal earlier than children raised in two parent homes.

Good luck!

Most states allow single parent adoptions as do many foreign countries. Also, I have known several single foster parents and that is a great thing as well!

Keep in mind with domestic, the expectant mother chooses the family, and many prefer two parent households over singles. Not all, but many.

It depends on where you want to adopt from. single people are more accepted now. international places usually specify. i think it matters more about your social support - ie will there be male role models -uncles, friends, etc. also, they will look at if you can support the child on your own. check with an agency. babies are harder to get in canada and the us, but i think the rules on adopting older children are slightly more lax. hope that helps. there are lots of websites. I have a single friend who adopted two girls from china.

A co-worker of mine went the sperm bank route, she's a single mom of twins. As for adopting, it may vary state-to-state as far as single moms go, but I would think if you're financially stable and in good standing - don't see why you couldn't adopt.
