See Hani's answer above.
In addition a field engineer is usually a very experienced engineer who has a knowledge of how mechanical or electrical equipment is required to be installed and tested prior to operation, or it could be a civil engineer or architect who is monitoring the method of construction of a building and its materials. or it could even be a chemical engineer who is responsible for the checkout and startup of a new train of equipment in a chemical plant.
A field engineer usually has some specialized knowledge in some particular subject or field.

In addition to the other answers, a field engineer can also be applied to a position where the person does not actually have an engineering degree, but is in charge of monitoring field productivity, schedule, cost, quality, etc. The title "field engineer" is often used in construction. Generally a 4 year degree in construction management, engineering, etc. are required although experience can often be substituted for all or part of the education requirement - it really varies depending on the company that is hiring & what their expectations are.

In the construction industry they monitor activities at construction sites. Work to ensure construction progresses as scheduled and contract specifications are adhered to. Inspect construction site daily and works with contractors to schedule deliveries. More advanced field engineers may design concrete formwork for smaller structures Requires a bachelor's degree (usually Construction Engineering, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or Architecture). Also, from my experience, this is usually an entry level job in which you bounce around from an office engineer (estimating, scheduling, project controls) and field engineer.

A field engineer can be any type of engineer-- but instead of being in an office, they work at the actual job site.
