i am still on the fence

Upon reviewing the answers to this question, I see that many answerers are saying things about doing research from adult stem cells or stem cells from the umbilical cord.

If these stem cells could do the job just fine, then I am positive that there would be no argument from anyone. Of course taking adult stem cells and stem cells from umbilicial cords would be the thing to do.

The problem is, many of these cells cannot do as many things as the early embryonic stem cells can. These early cells have the capability to work as many different types of cells. These capabilities change and lessen as the cells grow.

So, you see, many of the diseases that they want to work with stem cells on CANNOT work with adult stem cells. This is where we run into the problem of embryonic stem cells.

As a strong Christian, I do not approve of embryonic stem cell research. It would be fine if they took them from tissue that would not be used for anything else. But creating embryos just to destroy them for the cells is just wrong! It's destruction of human life.

The world is in a terrible place today. It is quite sad. Politics just complicate everything, making people feel guilty for whatever choices they make.

It's all up to the individual. You shouldn't be made out to be a cruel individual just because you don't approve of stem cell research!

Yes! 100%. From any and all sources that can possibly be of use to medical science, including human embryonic stem cells. I also favor major funding for all aspects of stem cell research, from all government levels, including federal.

The embryoes that will be used for this research are ones that would otherwise be discarded. For any person to whine about using those embryoes for research, instead, should be a good reason for evaluation of that person's sanity, for such a stance is TOTALLY irrational.

I approve of stem cell research; the moral issue is how those cells were obtained.

I feel it wrong to create embryos with the express entent of killing them for the stem cells. However, I don't find it objectionable to utilize stem cells from embryos which were aborted for more ethical reasons (such as too many of the IVF embryos survived).

I am not what people would call a "good" Christian, but I was brought up on Christianity. (I read the Bible myself; it is so different from organized religion.) Additionally, like the People (American Indians) I believe in the Great Spirit.
All that aside, I do NOT approve of stem cell research.
People forget the most important fact of life: if you are born, you WILL DIE. Me, I'd rather die naturally, as painlessly as possible (against Catholic doctorine! You are SUPPOSED to suffer!)
In the old days, most people that didn't die from war, giving birth, disease and lived into old age just simply died; few suffered long, painful, agonizing deaths. Now-a-days, a large part of the population live in "assisted living" arrangements, hospitals and nursing homes. That is not natural. Yes, people want to live as long as possible, but to be kept alive on a tube is not "living".
Stem cell research is just a costly, ineffective way to prolong the lives of a few at the expense of the entire society, with no guarantees of anything.
Look at diabetes and asthma: before, practically unknow, now rampant.
But, you decide which is more important: QUALITY or QUANTITY of life. I prefer QUALITY.

If the cells are collected from fetuses then NO. It is the same as abortion or child sacrifice. Which truly is the same thing.

However, there are plenty of places to get stem cells from, such as the umbilical chords, and amniotic fluids. Just as viable and just as able to produce the desired effects.

Amazing that the people who are in favor of fetus stem cell research are the same ones who are pro abortion.

Sure, if they are using adult stem cells or umbilical stem cells. But I am totally against embryonic stem cells, when there are alternate stem cells available. Adult stem cells have the same ability to change into every kind of cell, tissue, and organ in the body as embryonic stem cells.

I am an atheist and I oppose the use of embryonic stem cells IF the method for obtaining those cells involved or caused the destruction of the embryo.

If the stem cells come from a non-embryonic source, or from an embryonic source that was not harmed in obtaining the stem cells, I do not oppose the research.

Yes, for stem cells found/taken from the discarded umbilical cords and placenta after babies are born. These two are rich in perfect stem cells and are readily available, without major $$$$ and cost of life.

No, for creating babies, then killing the fetus to get a very few stem cells. This form is limited in its harvest. It is murder. And it costs $$$$ to equip the labs and run the labs needed to create them for a very few stem cells.

I do ... but just have an issue with embryos being created in a laboratory somehwere only to be destroyed for that purpose. There's got to be another way - what about the "leftovers" from IVF? umbilical chord stem cells (if they exist)? What about adult stem cells? stem cells from fetuses that were aborted?

Absolutely! As long as it is *not* *embryonic* stem cell research! Adult stem cells and stem cells from umbilical cord blood have shown *much* more promise and does *not* destroy human life! Yes, you read my answer right, I'm talking about "human life", *not* "potential human life"; once the human ovum is fertilized by a human spermatozoa, the fertilized egg *is* a "human" life!

Later: "Jenni" dear, Chinese researchers and a few researchers in Great Britain have used embryonic stem cells and it has resulted in mutated organs, abject failure, other abnormalities. To the best of my knowledge, there has *never* been a positive result from using embryonic stem cells; whereas there have been many successful outcomes from using adult and cord blood stem cells!
