You have to have a ss number by the time you file your first taxes after the baby is born. It doesn't matter where you live your social security number has nothing to do with where you are from. Apply now as you may need the number for other services from the govermnent.

Their social security card will be sent in the mail. All you do is file for an Address change at the post office.
You are given a number when you are born, doesn't matter what city or state you live in they are all the same.

At the hospital the staff brought us the papers to fill out. You can call the social secruity office and ask, just look in the blue pages in the phone book.
You will likely want them before tax time. It also help if you want to add them to the insurance...

When my 22 & 20 year old were born, I had to apply for one when they were about 6 weeks old. When my 14 year old came along, the hospital automatically filed this for me.
If you are moving soon, you may want to wait until you've moved, otherwise you'll have to turn around and file for a change of address.

We filled out those papers in the hospital. You won't be able to claim the baby on your income tax return unless you have a social security number.

My friend just had her baby last week, and while still in the hospital they ordered her social securtiy card for the baby (with their soc. #) and said it would take about 6 weeks to receive it in the mail. This is in Oregon, don't know if different states are different though.
Hope this helps!

That is something you should have gotten asap! Why on earth would you wait? That's a form of ID for kids, and is generally needed when getting them services- like WIC, school needs, insurance... need I stress it more?
