I knew a guy once who was totally on fire for God. He was an amazing person, a true Christian. Completely sold out to God. And he was fond of the word "p---ed." Not in itself a horrible word, probably. But coming from a person like him, it was kind of a shock, I guess. I remember him saying it during a conversation with a group of other teenagers at a burger joint, and a certain girl remarked to me, "I thought he was a Christian." The girl may or may not have been a Christian, or considered becoming a Christian, but my friend's testimony had certainly been tarnished in her eyes by that little word.

Well, let's see. There's Colossians 3:7-9:
You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices.

There's also the fact that whether we like it or not, the entire world is watching us, and if there is anything, ANYTHING, in our lives that could be considered wrong, people will think of us as hypocrites.

And of course, Paul warns us in Romans 14:16:
Do not allow what you consider good to be spoken of as evil.

the Bible says to "Abstain from all appearance of evil"
1 Thess .5:22 . when we swear we have the appearance of evil, we look just like everyone one else who is bad, I'm a teenager, once i thought that i could curse 'cuz it would be cool, and I was doing it with this gurl that wasn't a Christian, I can still remember the look on her face, in shock, she was speechless, I totally ruined my testimony to her, and I'm not really sure that I can ever go back, I've become strong, so I don't do that any more, but it really messes up your witness., 'cuz people really are looking to us for hope, and when we let them down when they realize were just like them, they think what's the use in being a Christian, there just like me. Christians are suposed to be different, like Christ, and when we curse were evil, like the devil.

as a christian teen, i will try to answer in a way they will understand.

james is a good book to learn about our mouth. it has a section called "taming the tongue."
ephesians 5:6

also, as a christian, it ruins our witness. the world is waiting for christians to slip up because they hold us to a higher standard. when we do, they call us hypocrites and say we don't believe what we say we believe

the more you cuss casually, the more likely you will be to cuss when you are angry. just saying "im not mad or trying to be mean" doesn't make it ok. it is giving satan a foothold so he can work his way in and exploit your weakness.

and finally, it is a commandment to keep our bodies pure before God. controlling our mouth and what comes out of it(and what goes into it) is a way of honoring him.

as we say in the south, "is that the same mouth you kiss your mom with?"

I guess the main motive is that as a Christian, you must strive to be like Christ. Christ never swore. yes there's evidence of people in the Bible who swore:

Samson and Peter especially.

we know that Jesus never swore especially because of Peter's change. when Peter was scared and denying Christ thrice, he was accused of speaking like Christ, so he started cussing!

I guess it's because since it's also a swear word for insultery purposes, it's also seen as just something you should avoid. nothing comes out of the heart that wasn't put in. really, I've yet to see someone who says "WT(insert one here)?" not also use it to insult or demean.

By that logic its ok to have sex every once in a while with the youth pastor's wife.

Its ok to murder someone, every once in a while.
