The red light camera went off while I was making a left turn today. I was waiting at the light to make a left turn when the light was green. I was the first car in the line and I was slightly infront of the white line. The thing is that there wasn't an opening until the cars slowed down for the yellow light. As I waited to make sure that the cars would come safely to a stop (there are plenty of NYC cars that would go through the red light), The light turned red as i began to make the left turn and the red light camera went off.

Is there a chance that I argue against it?

Thanks for your responses.

I reading up on the NYS DMV it states that I can enter the intersection when green and make the turn as cars stop for the red light.

"You want to turn left at an intersection ahead. A vehicle is approaching from the opposite direction, going straight ahead. You must wait for approaching traffic to go through before you turn. You may enter the intersection, however, to prepare for your left turn if the light is green and no other vehicle ahead of you is preparing for a left turn (see "Turns" later in this chapter). When you enter the intersection, stay to the right of the center line. Keep your wheels straight to avoid being pushed into oncoming traffic should a rear-end collision occur. When approaching traffic clears or stops for a red light, complete your turn."

If you were already in the intersection while the light was green you had the right of way when the light changed.
It really just depends on your location.
I would argue that one myself.

Technically, entering the intersection to make a left turn like you did is a violation. The law (in most states anyway) says to remain behind the line until the path is clear to actually make the turn.

A sympathetic judge might give you a break, but don't get your hopes up too high.

Nope....the law actually says your vehical has to be completely clear of the intersection when the light goes to red

Sure you can. My daughter has argued in Iowa several times, and she has yet to win, even though the IA. Supreme Court ruled against the practice. It is under appeal. She lost more in the time she took off work than if she had just paid.

well not really there are alot of states livin on this new well not to new thing the thing that was told to me if the light is red and you are still in the middle of the road you still ran it but there could be a chance that they will dismiss and let court cost pay for it if its your first offense

Yes, and good luck. If you entered the intersection under green and had to wait that is.

In Ohio I have heard of people arguing that how can they prove that the camera was working properly. It is afterall a machine and how can they prove that it didn't screw up. Other than that you may be stuck with the ticket.

Go argue it and then you will know if it did any good.
