Actually the gray German standard uniforms were
not overly "cool". The black SS ones might look
cool. But a uniforms purpose is not to look cool.
It's to blend in with the local average surrounding
in the best possible way. And black/red doesn't
really do that anywhere.

Well, I was clearly not alive during WWII. However, in the video games I have played (sorry my only reference point for this), those "dang cool" Nazi uniforms stand out like a sore thumb. As a matter of fact, I cannot think of a uniform from the previous century that made a better target. I'm sure there were some, I just can't think of em. Like Scott S said, the purpose of a military uniform is to blend in with the local environment. It's called "camouflage."

As the other person mentioned, generally the "coolest" uniforms lose the war. The reasons for that is generally the "cool" guys spend more time being "cool" than learning their craft, the art of war. Our guys learn their craft of war which is one of the reasons we have been successful in our wars. If you have any doubts, check out all the dictators in the banana republics over the years or those in Africa---all the losers had the flashiest uniforms. Just like beauty being only skin deep...the same with uniforms and "tin soldiers".

There is an old military "law" namely that the side with the best looking uniforms loses the war. Check out your history and see how often that is true. War is a matter of killing people and breaking things. One should dress down for that kind of activity.

Probably because they're Nazi uniforms. They're a symbol of pure evil and are, hence, one of the ugliest uniforms around. Personally, I've always loved the USMC dress blues. They're totally awesome!

they cost too much. during the war, i met a german soldier and swapped my uniform for his. it was the field grey version, with a cool swastika eagle and a helmet covered with camouflage netting. i got a luger out of the deal, too, but was shot and killed by my own side

My dad thought they were really cool too.. That's why he took so much pride in shooting at them, wearing his drab Air/Army corp outfit during WW2.
Obviously he should have been better dressed huh?

The uniforms are spiffy, but there are too many crybabies to make it happen.
