The quick answer, in general and at their price point, I don't think you can beat Definitive speakers, and, I know you can't beat their subs.
I really depends what you're looking for. All Definitive speakers are accurate and uncolored. They are meant to be pure, not to produce the highest volume for your money.
Definitive subs offer the lowest frequency response available at three times their price, bar none. They dip into the subsonic range, that you feel, but don't hear. Their bass reproduction is tight, never boomy. But if you're looking for slam, there are better choices.
If Definitive speakers appeal to you, you should also listen to Polk Audio. Some of their RM series speakers fall into the same price category and are very comparable.
Personally, I still think the Definitive sub makes their system the winner.
The receiver is a somewhat trickier question. Myself, I think the quality of the build is the biggest factor, but, it all depends on what pushes your buttons. If you want volume or bells and whistles, get a Sony. If you want clean sound, look at Yamaha, Denon, Onkyo, Marrantz. Robert's suggestions above are all worth a look, and, I agree on the importance of the cables to getting great sound. I'm not a fan of Monster, their quality is great, but, there are others of equal quality for 20-30% less money.

You can actually get a great receive for $500. I spent some time working with high end electronics and have seen some whoppers! But, if you are looking for a great sound I would consider Denon Audio receivers. They use great technology and give accurate audio reproduction. Also, be sure and use good speaker cables and good audio cables. I would suggest Monster Cable. Monster Cable uses the latest technology to reduce electromagnetic interference so that you get the best sound from your system. Good Luck!
