Well, you sure gathered some weird people with this question.
............and like most of the time, they don't know what there
talking about........they are just giving their opinion.....like the "toxic ink" guy.......what a joke.
No, you will be fine....it's just another one of the rumors that
are put out by the people that don't like tats.
Oh, by the way, it won't "leak" anywhere...................

This is an urban myth. Women who have lower back tattoos (what some people call tramp stamps) can get an epidural because the ink isn't just floating around under the skin in liquid form so there's no chance that the ink will be carried to the spine during this procedure.

So not true I have a lower back tattoo {don't like the whole tramp stamp} for about 9 yrs and I have a 3 yr old. Then again I had a natural birth but by choice not because of any tattoo. So whoever said that is either confused or just wanted to make someone not get a lower back tattoo.

No I don't think that this could happen. The ink is in your skin held within the scar that the tattoo needle makes when the image is drawn on you. The ink can not escape into the spine. Granted if you can handle the pain of a tramp stamp you shouldn't need to have a pain killer during labor.

The ink will not leak into your spine. And don't call it a tramp stamp. I got my tattoo there when I was a virgin at 18. The ink is put into the skin and kind of stains it. If you were to cut the skin where a tattoo was, you would just bleed. The ink would not come out.

Joseph,
At the risk of sounding really stupid (well, too late!), what is the definition of a "Tramp Stamp", please & thanks!

I LOVE the thumbs down for admitting I didn't know...
Anyway, thanks to FMAACMskipppy, I now know the answer. Here's a copy of his link's answer:
"“Tramp Stamp” is a derogatory term referring to a tattoo which a women places on her lower back. It is especially popular among women born in the late 70’s, 80‘s, and even early 90’s. Fair or unfair, these tattoos have a socially constructed connotation associated with them. These women are labeled as tramps, whores, or other derogatory sexually promiscuous terms. Although these are often bias generalized claims, there have been sociological studies done by the American Psychological Association, Federal Bureau of Prisons, and other demographic researchers showing strong correlative evidence associating tattoos with high risk behavior, illegal substance abuse and sexual promiscuity. These risk factors are greatest in the age range which these types of tattoos are gaining main stream popularity. Some have also jokingly stated that by 2050, the “tramp stamp” will be renamed the “gramp stamp”.

not true. the tramp stamp is usually very low on the back, by the bum. an epidural is administered in the mid back, several vertebrae higher.
plus, it's just ink. the ink doesnt affect the blood or spinal fluid or any of that.
PS: to shorty81179, you are SO right. the tatoo hurt almost as bad as labor. maybe i didnt need the epidurals after all!! lol

I just read a medical article on this: it said some older anesthesiologists will not give epidurals, but most doctors agree there is no reason not to. The ink cannot leak. If you get one, when you decide to have a baby, check with your hospital to make sure they will give you an epidural if you want one - if they say no, then look into other hospitals.

No, that's not the least bit true. It's all a myth.
BTW, it's a lower back tattoo, not a tramp stamp.

Firstly- stop calling it a tramp stamp. don't generalize.
second- no, that is categorically untrue. A nurse told me that the only reason hospitals don't like injecting through tattoos, is because it could mess the tattoo up and they don't want to face a lawsuit.
I can't believe anyone believes this sh*t.
