A Chevy Cavalier is a great choice. The market is full of very good reliable used ones and they are very safe. I know someone who T-boned a huge truck (because she ran a red light), and literally walked away unhurt. Check them out.

Best 2nd hand cars are either Toyota or Honda, but that means they're not necessarily cheap. Look for something in late 80's, early 90's, with up to 150K miles, and you should be okay, assuming rest of car is good, too.

I bought a 1991 Geo Prizm (fake Toyota, before taken over by Chevy) with 120K miles for $500. Engine and tranny were good, even tho' body was trashy. I'm up to 230K miles, engine still strong, and could still get the $500 from selling it.

The most mass produced cars are best to own as second hand cars. Lots of parts and knowledge and easy to repair. The Chevy Caprice, Malibu, Lumina, or Ford Crown Victoria, Mercury Grand Marquis, Taurus. Some have had recalls so it's best to know whether the model you pick has been recalled and repaired.

The 8-cylinder models have a more durable history. The four cylinder cars are OK for point A to point B cars. Rent a car for long distance hauls and use the four banger for your daily driver.

Good Luck!

I would suggest an '85 to '95 Honda Civic or Accord. Very safe, very cheap.

A used Toyota. Toyotas have a good record of running without problems for a very long time.
