"Men never commit evil so fully and joyfuly as when they do it for religious convictions"

We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart."

The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

No man ever believes that the Bible means what it says; he is always convinced that it says what he means.

Philosophy is questions that may never be answered. Religion is answers that may never be questioned...........

Excelent!

I would add:

"With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion."

Hi!

You list six quotations and I'll number them in the order given with my reply to each.

1) The writer doesn't know this. He/she is simply expressing an opinion that appears impossible to verify. Only mind reading time travelers can know this. Do you believe in that?

2) Why restrict this to religion? How about ALL beliefs? Given this standard, this statement can only be respected as the private fancy of its adherent.

3) This misunderstands faith. The first definition of faith is, "Confident belief in the truth, value, or trustworthiness of a person, idea, or thing;" and the last definition is, "A set of principles or beliefs. " We theologians NEVER exclude faith from reason, so the author of this claim misrepresents faith.

4) Not true. At one time the assertion the Earth is round would have been an "extraordinary" claim. However, the proof didn't require extraordinary evidence. It appears one must equivocate to sustain this claim.

5) Again, the person making this claim would have to be a mind reader to know this. In addition, one could apply this reasoning to ANY text (books, legislation, etc.). Why restrict this to the Bible unless it is motivated by religious bigotry?

6) This person needs a lesson in grammar. That aside, the statement is false. Very few religious leaders today disallow questions about matters of faith. You may disagree with their answers, but that does not ipso facto legitimize the charge these leaders disdain those questions.

You asked what the YA community thinks of these quotations. I have given you my observations. If you'd like to discuss this further, feel free to email me.

Have a great day,
Scalia

Great specks of insight on all of them.

Especially the first one, which reminds me a lot of Thomas Jefferson, and the one on extraordinary claims, which makes me think of Carl Sagan.

I could use any of them for my profile quote. Thanks for sharing. My personal favorite is the first. I have been convinced that people who do horrible evil are always convinced that they are doing good.

Pascal, Mencken, Franklin, Sagan, Shaw, and I don't know who the last one was.
