I have TMJ. Cold weather makes it worse. It's in my left jaw more than the right.

The only thing that stopped my cracking was my chiropractor adjusting my jaw. I have a mouth guard, had my bite adjusted, still had some minor problems so I opted for the chiro and it's much better. I have to have it adjusted every few months and it's well worth it.

TMJ will definitely cause a "cracking" sound...and not always when eating. Actually, opening your mouth wide (like when biting into a hoagie for instance) aggravates the condition. If a bite problem has been ruled out, the the best thing to do (as silly as it may sound) is to avoid opening your mouth that wide. I know this to be true because I worked many many years as a certified dental lab tech and I, too suffer from TMJ.
