Thank you for your responses. Lots of different perspectives on rudeness.

One thing I have never understood is that statement "you have to earn respect." What does that mean? I believe you should respect everyone - it has nothing to do with earning.

There's courtesy, and there's respect. The first ought to be a given, the second really needs to be earned.

Very good point. People except to be respected, but turn around and say that others need to earn thiers. What makes them so much better that they should just be respected right off the bat and not return that respect to anyone else?

I do think you earn DISrespect.

People shouldn't have to earn respect. That's right. Basic human decency should make people act good to one another regardless. I can see what the other person said, though, about how people can lose respect by their actions.

Respect is an assumption of good faith and competence in another person or in the whole of oneself. Depth of integrity, trust, complementary moral values, and skill are necessary components.

Just by your existence I have no knowledge of how much of the factors you possess. You must earn my approval on those factors based on my definitions of them to garner my respect otherwise you are just a person that has not fulfiled any of the criteria.

People should not be rude, period. It does not matter who you are, you should not be unkind to someone else! About earning respect, well that is something else. Yes, you should respect everyone, I do, unless that person has done something that is absolutely awful to me. It should be that we have respect for everyone, unless they do something that hurts you.

I am in agreement with you that there should be a base amount of respect for everyone. From your words and your behaviour, it is from these that people should decide in how high esteem they hold you.

I think you can lose respect for some people. . .. for example a murderer, child molester, rapist etc. etc. I do not respect everyone. In fact there are some people that I have zero respect for.

That is there way of nicely saying that you will never have their respect. Awful isn't it?

ignore those false believers, they are afraid to open their eyes and see the truth. I hope they will change their rude ways and become good christians so they won't end up in the H-word place. And that's not heaven
