You need to go to Philosophy and logic to find the secular answer - the religious answer often leaves people confused and bewildered.

Truth is a relative thing, and is that which has the evidence to support it. Philosophy holds that there is no such thing as an absolute "truth". Somewhat against the religious view, huh?

You must consider things like the "Law of Non-contradiction" which says that a woman cannot be BOTH pregnant and not pregnant at the same time.

Here's a simple anology - you enter a room with 100 religious people, and then all have a different , mutually exclusive, idea (like Christians, Jews and Muslims). Simple logic says that at least 99 of them must be wrong, and a good argument can be made that if the "truth" is so difficult to master, then there is a high probability that they are ALL wrong.

Also, those who claim that the "truth" is obvious for their religion cannot seem to convince people of other religions that it is true. Why not is a very interesting question.

The dictionary says that truth is that which compels acceptance by force of evidence or logic. That is why, today, that the Earth is more or less "known" to revolve about the Sun, despite the religious "knowing" that everything revolved about the Earth just a few hundred years ago.

So, again, "truth" is that which has the evidence to support it. Or, in the realm of competing ideas, the "truth" is the idea that has the proponderance of the evidence behind it. We even find such ideas in the US legal system, even though it is claimed that it is derived from Christian views (which is not true, by the way,)

If you want to go to the store and you have to go straight ahead and then you want to go to another one and you have to turn left. Which one is right, left or straight ahead? It would seem that most everything is true, it's relative. You have to apply the scripture that's appropriate fot the situation. There's a time for everything under the sun so everything is truth, it all exists, especiallly in the mind where we do our evaluating and have to look at all the evidence. Even untruth exsists as an idea. Truth is an abstraction and doesn't really exist. It's a trick question. You can string any words together, but it doesn't make a sensible question. If you mean the nature of reality, we pretty much know the factors in any situation. If you mean what should we do, common sense tells you. If you have a specific question you come to Yahoo Answers, the Bible or God. Truth is an abstract idea and varies with the situation. I think relativity was supposed to answer that question. Of suppose there are deeper implications to that question, but they have never been spelled out to me. If the question is made plain enough the answer is usually relatively easy.

truth is the truth. by their fruits shall ye know them. you know this by instinct, but choose to ignore the truth for many reasons. man has grown over the ages in the use of our intellect, but in doing so we have gotten away from the teachings of god. why? because in our arrogance we think that science is the answer to everything, and we forget that god created the science. we think that since we can now see back into time(that is essentially what a telescope does is see light as it was in the past), and can create things like radar, nuclear power, nuclear weapons, cure disease, etc. we dont need god.

if you really want to seek the truth, turn your efforts inward, and open the minds eye. when you can do that, then you will start seeing the truth about things. you will also start seeing people differently, as you will be able to read people better. you will be able to tell when someone is lying, hiding something, being truthful, etc. you will start to see the world as it really is, not what others want you to think.

When you have emptied your mind completely and can "hear".....Everything you need comes to you.
It takes a while but interestingly, everyone comes to the same conclusions.
Einstein was aware of this and so was James Clerk Maxwell. You must free your mind of ALL beliefs, pre-conceived ideas, notions and assumptions and the truth will find you.
It is what all the great spiritual leaders - Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed, etc. were trying to teach but people let their egoes get in the way of hearing.
Words cannot describe the "truth" - it is something you feel within.
Some athiests are able to feel it and some religious people are able to feel it but only when they quiet their minds and allow the information to come to them.
It is what some people call "God", others call "The Universe", Einstein called it "The Old One" some call it the "Cosmic order"......
It is a pretty heavy topic for this page, mind.
Try meditating and clearing your mind.
You see, alot of this arguing amongst so-called Christians and Athiests I see on this page is darkness from both parties. You haven't allowed the universal truth -which is the same for every living organism - to reach you.
You will know it when you feel it and you will learn to accept others. The universal truth is bigger than religions and surpasses them. All religions are based on this universal truth.
Religions are "fingers on the hand of God".

To whomever gave the "thumbs down" - what in the world are you searching for? You have it. Look in the mirror and there you will find your truth.

The truth is that man made up god a long long time ago to help the people in power stay in power. Back then they didn't know what the sun or the moon was or where dirt or water comes from. All they "knew" was god put them here for us and you have to listen to god and the person (king) god puts in charge. Also you want to go to heaven and you have to pay to go to church. Church was just a big scam for power and money. If god did all this stuff with Jesus, Moses, the flood, and everything else the bible talks about how come he doesn't do anything now to prove he is there. He expects us to believe a book that is older than anybody alive. Also the truth is that if you believe in god you are not truly happy you are just blind happy and you will see one day or another that you will be disappointed, I pity you guys who live your life according to a book for someone else instead of yourself.

"Let God be true, but every man a liar"

Romans 3:4

There have been many critics saying that there is no God, that you cannot prove there is a God. But there are many evidences that God is true and if you study the Bible out you will find that history always supports the facts of the Bible .

There is a good book written and very comprehensive called "The New Evidence That Demands A Verdict Fully Updated To Answer The Questions Challenging Christians Today" by Josh McDowell. In it McDowell categorises many of the different evidences that point out the truth of the Bible.

It's a good read.

The truth is something of great value, but that is often forgotten.. The truth is what gets my attention, when all around us are the opposites of the truth.
The truth holds to me a very strong something, that I put up at the top of my ladder and look down at the rest of what is not.
The truth is something some of us can't wait to expel, while others work so hard to keep it in.

In my opinion. ;)
