"Judge not lest ye be Judged", after all.

2007-06-20 07:16:57 · 28 answers · asked by Anonymous in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.
3"Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye."

Where does this say anything about it being ok to judge others Pastor Art? In fact, if you quote it in context, it seems to be saying that the Christians who say that the nonbelievers are going to hell, then they will be judged to go to Hell as well?

When I tell people I'm going to hell, it means I have to go to Walmart for something.

As a Christian, I would not tell someone that they are going to hell, but I will tell them that if they continue on a destructive path, that will/may lead them there.

You are taking that verse out of it's original meaning.
What Jesus says is don't be a hipocryte. You must look at other verses in the Bible and not pick and choose. Jesus also said 'not to worry about the sawdust in your brother's eye, when you have a plank in your eye' meaning you must not judge someone if you yourself can be judged in the same manner.
The key word is "lest". Jesus didn't say DO NOT JUDGE, PERIOD! He said if you judge, be careful because you too may be judged.

If you look at verses 3-5, you will notice that what Jesus is really saying is that you cannot advise other people until you have first gotten your own act together. He is not saying that you cannot judge period.

However, only Jesus can ultimately decide who is going either to Heaven or hell. But Christians are called to WARN people who are living in sin that they are in danger of hellfire -- it is a command from Jesus himself.

--------------------------------------------

"If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over."
~Matthew 18:15

Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted. Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.
~Galatians 6:1-2

If any of you has a dispute with another, dare he take it before the ungodly for judgment instead of before the saints? Do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!
~1 Corinthians 6:1-3

My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
~James 5:19-20

Yes and no. Since Jesus had a prehuman existence, he well knew the condition of the dead as he was the first of all creation. The only one personally created by God. He then created everything else using Jesus. The us in "Let us make man in our image." part.

He knew as Eccles. 9:5,10 says the dead are not able to feel pain or pleasure or know anything. So a fiery burning place would make no sense. That is why the Bible doesn't teach that. Hell, Hades, Sheol, whatever the language is mankind's common grave. 6 feet under, cremated, on poles, or in the sea--that is the grave or hell.

That's not judging that's just fact. If they don't believe n Jesus then that's exactly where they are going. Jesus didn't mean it in the way that you describe here. He is talking about judging people by the way they talk or dress. Basically he was telling them to search themselves for what we do wrong, but he also says to spread the word of God which would lead to your question.

There are those who are clearly not following God's rules... play by God's rules... or you lose... making the statement that one who is not playing by God's rules will lose, is not "judging"... that said... I can not think of a valid reason for any one to say to another that they are "going to hell"... they will find out for themselves soon enough... I have, in the past, had ocasion to tell some to go to hell... but now that I am of The Church I refrain from those types of commments... as best I can control myself.

Not at all. In the context of the passage that quote is a condemnation of hypocrisy. It has nothing to do with eternal punishment.

In the final analysis it is God who judges mankind. We can see what his criteria are in the Bible.

The bible clearly teaches that non-believers will spend eternity in hell, separated from God. Where we have to be careful is in making judgements about who is saved and who is not.

The bible tells us to make judgements, but not to judge self-righteously.

We need to spread the gospel message the the lost can be saved but be careful about calling someone lost until they have expressed that they have not placed their faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ.

What about the many passages (15) that Jesus talked about hell?

When telling the Gospel (Good News) we must include the entire truth...not just the "feel good" parts.

If you need the scriptures, I've got them in front of me. Hmmm, ironic.

Peace.

If you say to a man that he is condemned to hell...sure you are not following the teachings of Christ he is the judge and we are not. If you tell a man that sin ends in hell you are simply telling them the truth as Jesus also taught.
