you could all make a big banner in your friends honor, and have the whole school sign it.
do a collection of photo's others might have of them and make a collage
have each donate $5 and give it too her to help her with funeral expenses.

Wow that really sucks
In the past three years, there has been four kids at my school die.
The first kid drove drunk and crashed into a tree. A lot of kids at school gave money to the family to help out with funeral costs.
Another kid killed himself.
Not many people wanted to help out the family, which is really sad, it wasn't their fault at all. I personally had my mom cook something and brought it over to the family so the mother didn't have to cook.
Last year a girl got into a car crash and died 6 days later. At first everyone was trying to help out the family with medical costs, but after she died, they gave the money to a charity.
Last fall a friend of mine was killed when he was hit by a car while he was skate boarding. One of his other friends started a foundation in his name. A local skate shop heard about it and donated about 1,500 dollars.
I don't know anything about the kid you knew so I don't have any specific ideas. Maybe my past experiences could help you out a bit. Helping the family out with money is the best idea because funerals cost alot of money and they might not be working for a little while because of their grief.

i went to a small high school also. 2 kids died between 10Th and 12Th. one in my class and the other was one of my brothers good friends, he committed suicide. he was a like a brother to me. anyway, his classmates planted a tree outside where they found his body, and then they had there senior photo taken with that tree. when this kids mother died each student was able to donate some money to buy them something. i believe it was an angel. do something that will last a life time. plants are nice, but they die.have an assembly and come up with ideas. sorry for your loss.

I had a friend who died at a young age.Firstly we called her mom and dad and spent some time with them to console them, help them out emotionally.
After a few months of her passing away, we as a group raised funds in her memory, These funds were to go towards a scholarship for a deserving kid in her college.
You can start such an initiative where you create a fund on his/her memorial

Only time is going to heal this woman as losing a child is unimaginable but I am sure if you let her know how much you cared about her son/daughter that will help a little. Most people are afraid to talk about someone that has died in fear of making someone sad...but the truth is, most people want to hear about how their loved one touched other peoples lives. Talk about her child and how that person touched your life...she will appreciate it.

I like the first answer you got.
You could also take up a collection for her.
Put a input in the local newspaper telling all the nice things everyone knew about him/her.
