Considering that take-offs are the time when statistically you are most likely to have something go fatally wrong, there's nothing wrong with going to sleep! If something happens, you'll just keep dreaming!

I try to sleep during takeoffs, but as a newbie private pilot, I get too excited during that part and have to keep watching out the window.

But in the back of mind, I'm also constantly aware of the plane's configuration looking for the slightest hint of any problems. Not that I'd be able to do anything about it from seat 14A!

But a failure during takeoff is the one emergency I hope I never ever have during my future hours as a private pilot!

There are no rules requiring you to be awake for take-off (or during the safety briefing or landing). I regularly travel and usually am asleep before the doors close, so miss the safety briefing, take-off and get woken up by the wheels touching down on landing.

I've always reckoned the screaming will wake me up if there's a problem :-)
