If this had been a Christian group wanting “holy water” it would have been holy war. Who can any still claim these people are not anti-Christian in every way possible.
The American Civil Liberties Union has given their blessing to the public funding of Islamic footbaths at the University of Michigan, to let Muslims wash their feet before prayers.

The ACLU says it has nothing to do with religion.

This pleases CAIR greatly, because now the Islamic community won’t have to pay for them: Muslims won’t fund footbaths. And also because it’s another small step toward shari’a.
DEARBORN — Muslim leaders in Metro Detroit have decided not to raise private money to pay for two footbaths at a local college campus now that the American Civil Liberties Union has said the plan doesn’t pose constitutional problems.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn’s plan to spend $25,000 on the footbaths was criticized on conservative blogs and radio shows this month. Critics said using public money for the project would violate the First Amendment, which says governments can’t favor or subsidize religions.

Muslims are required to wash body parts, including feet, up to five times daily before prayers. University officials say the floor-level wash basins are needed because some students at the 8,600-student campus wash their feet in the sinks.

Dawud Walid, executive director of the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), said his group was concerned a public outcry would cause the university to back down from the project.

“If the ACLU had decided to take legal action against the UM-Dearborn, we probably would have called for the university to raise the funds privately, just so that the UM-Dearborn wouldn’t have to go through the trouble of having to defend its position against the ACLU,” Walid said.

So Long Church/State Separation: University of Michigan to Fund Muslim Footbaths

By Debbie Schlussel
Forget about the Constitutionally mandated separation of church and state . . . at least when it comes to mosque and state.
When students return in the fall, the University of Michigan-Dearbornistan is set to have Muslim footbaths in at least two locations.
And your tax funds are paying for it.

Last week, Kay Pepin, University of Michigan-Dearborn Director of Facilities Planning, and Terry Gallagher, a U of M-Dearborn spokesman, confirmed to me that plans are in the works to build Muslim footbaths (they refer to them as "foot-washing stations") in both the University Center and Fairlane Center buildings at the university.
When I asked why the footbaths were being installed, Gallagher told me that this is "an accommodation

The ACLU long ago lost it's pure and true focus when it's goal to legalize abortion and end abject sexist discrimination and racism was won in victorious Supreme Court battles.

Like retired useless soldiers yearning for "glory days" of war, the ACLU, felt lost and pitifully useless. They almost folded up shop altogether.

That is...until they opted a new and brilliant strategy: ANTAGONIZE AMERICA!! B*tch-slap American decency by taking sides that decry opposition and welcome heated controversy.

Then the ACLU took sides with anti-Christian issues, hailing and defending atheist rights, defending the rights of soul-less, remorse devoid murderers.....and even protecting child molestation/child pornography clubs and secret organizations (all for a hefty, yet to be uncovered 'pay-ola', mind you.....).

Atheist Civil Liberties Union.....maybe one day Socialist (communist) Civil Liberties Union....the ACLU is anything but pro-American.

The ACLU CAN be courtroom defeated--and the media should hail ACLU defeats in court. Promote the failures of the ACLU in civil courts across the USA. Then, defy the ACLU and go one better by IGNORING pro-ACLU podunks.

Now, the first question I have, as a non Islamic, what would the Islamic peoples feelings be toward me, an infidel washing my feet in the foot bath? Basically the ACLU is saying that the foot bath in and of itself is not a violation of church and state and that the University wanted to have them installed to prevent the safety hazard that arises out of people washing their feet in sinks. I understand the decision, but don't think that foot baths should be provided. In Judaism, consider the med student. To be in the room with a dead body makes the Jew "Unclean" and he must bathe in a Mikvah and be away from the community for a period of time to be considered "Clean" again. There are a lot of Jewish Doctors out there and yet I've never heard of a medical school in the states having a Mikvah.
If the hygiene of their feet prevent them from going to a Public University, so be it. Go to a Private Islamic College and have a foot bath on every corner, but the publicly funded system should pander to no religion and as far as the safety issue, raise the sinks high enough to where they can't get their feet in them.

Nice the way you left off the explanation, as including it would have shown that you don't really have a point:

Kary Moss, director of the Detroit branch of the ACLU, said its review concluded the plan is a "reasonable accommodation" to resolve "safety and cleanliness issues" that arose when Muslims used public sinks for foot cleaning before prayers, which often spilled water on bathroom floors.

"We view it as an attempt to deal with a problem, not an attempt to make it easier for Muslims to pray," said Moss, who likened the plan to paying for added police during religious events with huge turnouts.

"There's no intent to promote religion."

No that is what they stand for. What ever reasonably intelligent people think on an issue, ACLU's whole gig is to take the opposite side. Once you realize that, it makes it fairly easy to just expect the worst from them.
