I you're referring to mental exercise as in, say, learning or other mentally stimulating activities, there is an overall positive effect upon the brain.

Learning helps to stimulate neuron growth and interaction. New connections are built that helps to solidfy information. When concerning a physical activity, if that is prolonged, then that part of the brain responsible for assisting that activity is increased.

The brain is a far different 'beast' than the rest of the body. It does not, or rarely (under certain diseases or conditions), overwork itself.

No. Mental exercises (thinking) actually build new pathways and synapses in the brain. It increases intelligence, and causes no damage.

Thinking does burn calories, and it is possible by thinking alone to drain your body of energy - which can be damaging to the whole body.

P.S. - Top Contributors seem to all have the habit of being abusive and rhetorical, not that they actually have a top contribution.

No "Dain Bramage" from thinking too hard. Though like anything else done in extreme it will get tired.. In that sense it is like a muscle, overuse will cause fatigue which lessens efficacy until you just have to take a break because you can't concentrate and or retain any more information..
as was once said.. "The more highly developed the mind, the greater the need for play."

Key word (excess) most things in excess are bad.
Young people don't experience dementia-senility.
This is due to brain strain over the years.
My opinion would be that people that didn't experience brain strain over the years likely dont end up with dementia.
