Two guys go into a Pentecostal church and someone starts speaking in toungs. One guy, who is hard of hearing asks, what are they saying? The other guy said God knows what they are saying.

that was a terrible pun

"God knows" literal
"God knows" expressional

kinda accurate though. we can't know what they're saying unless someone is gifted to interpret, or the speaker starts speaking in an understandable language...

In a manner of speaking, yes. God gave the gift of tongues as a confirmation of a message to a specific body of people and as an edification to an individual truly seeking Him for a deep personal matter. The Scripture does say though, that an "interpreter" should be present to confirm that what is being spoken is truly from God and not some "gibberish" made up by the speaker for some sort of spiritual "attention".
Another misconception is that it's all "gibberish" to begin with. The people who were passing by the Upper Room on the day of Pentecost "....heard them (the 120 in the Upper Room) speak in his OWN language"....These passersby were from all over the region of Galilee and spoke different languages. They were amazed to hear these men and women who were no more fluent in another tongue than they were in the 120 participants' native tongue speak all these different languages so fluently. A "modern" example would be like God giving an Irish person a message in Japanese that had NO prior knowledge or fluency in that tongue, plus having a Spirit-led interpreter present who ALSO had no prior experience with Japanese translate it!

I agree with others. There is no separate event to receive the Spirit. From what I've seen many Pentecostal churches have made the Spirit out to be something he's not (and I'm saying this after having attended a Pentcostal church for a half-dozen years). Receiving the Spirit has nothing to do with baptism and nothing to do with speaking in tongues. If you've accepted Christ, he's (the Spirit) with you.

As far as Lutheran, Pentecostal, etc..........that is a matter
of your own preference, belief etc but I would hope that
the emphasis would be on believing in Jesus Christ who
saved us.

By the way, I'm not against "tongues" either, but there
are satanic groups as well as other religions that
speak in "tongues".

Everything that is taught and practices is open to
being examined by the Word of God.

Also, gifts of the spirit are not the same as fruit of the
Spirit. Gifts from God are great but we also need
mature people who walk in love and treat others well.

God bless everyone!

ps I don't see anything wrong with the joke, per se.

Of course some Christians would take it as an attack
on something holy but I don't think that is what is
intended.

Ironically, I'm the reverse of Pastor Art: Raised Pentecostal, and now Lutheran.

As for the joke, it is accurate to Pentecostal theology. It is simply not funny.

I have tossed salad with toungs, I mean tongs. 8^D

The devil can't stand it when Pentecostals speak in a language only God can understand.

Nice try. But I hear crickets ... {whispering} its okay to clap now...

The joke is in 'God knows what they are saying.' To them, it is true, but 'God knows' is also an expression equal to 'who knows?'

There's no reason to take this stuff seriously, pastorart, and I don't see how there's any sinning against the Holy Spirit here. Oh, wait, people aren't supposed to have any humor.

First, "tongues" aren't spelled that way.

Second, you call that a joke? You have a weird sense of humor.

Please remember that sinning against the Holy Spirit is the one sin that cannot be forgiven.

Pastor Art

PS: I'm a Bible believing, non denominational Christian. I was rasied Lutheran, I became a Christian duing my sophomore year of high school and was filled with the Holy Spirit during my senior year of high school. That made me a Luthercostal.
