Your driving here is not only inconvenient for you, it's inconvenient for us. PLEASE take public transit and leave your car at home, so as to reduce honking, congestion, and air pollution. Every little bit helps.

If you are only visiting Manhattan leave the car at home, because you will never find parking, the parking is expensive when you do find it and you will have to fight traffic everywhere you go. Take the bus and then when in the city travel using mass transit (subway & buses).
If you might get into other boro's like Queens, Bronx or Brooklyn, then driving might be an option. But even then, you need to consider purchasing "the club" to protect your car, be careful where you parked because of hefty NYC parking tickets and would still be better off taking the subway into Manhattan.

If I were you, I'd leave my car at home. If you will be spending most of your time in the city then you don't need it. You'll save yourself A LOT of money by using public transportation because parking is RIDICULOUS! You can't park in the street anymore, its all for cops nowadays. And if you are lucky a find a street parking, you have to constantly feed the meter. I say take the bus and enjoy your time in NYC instead of worrying about your car the whole time. It will be the nice anyway and you can't really see the city driving around and dodging cabs, lol.

Unless you're just planning to drive by all the tourist stuff, leave the car home and do public transpo. You'll save a ton in gas, tolls, and parking, and actually get to ENJOY the things you're planning to do.
Traffic can be heinous. Gas is still over $3 a gallon. Tolls are expenisive (depending on where you're coming from) and you can easily spend $100 or more a day in just parking fees. Even if you cab it between sites, you'll probably still come out WAY ahead.

Not a good idea. Parking is going to cost you a lot of money.
public parking is hard to find. If you are staying in a hotel, you will be charged daily rates for the car on top of a tip. It will run you about $200-300 or more for parking. Next you have to worry about parking tickets and where you can and can't park.
The NYC police will cover your entire windshield with a thick sticker if you are parked illegal. This happened to my sister in law. The sticker makes it impossible to drive! On top of all of that, you need to worry about your car getting stolen/broken into.
You are better off using a taxi service or the bus. This way you won't get lost. NYC is wonderful place to visit...enjoy
and eat good too.

It depends on what you plan on seeing, exactly...
Manhattan sucks to drive into if you arent familiar with it. But lets put it this way. All it is, is a tiny island that you have to weave in and out of. You CAN find parking on the street, but it isnt going to be ANYWHERE near the tourist-y spots - it would mostly be on the upper east or upper west sides, and even THAT is difficult. If you plan on visiting site outside of the city, like Jersey, or Long Island, or Connecticut, then a car will be okay if you arent worried about putting it in a garage.
Avergage garage price is roughly $40/day, +/- $10 or so...

I don't recommend taking a car. You should probably consider taking the train because if you are going alone it will be cheaper and you won't have to worry about where your parking your car and things like that. Also the driving is extremely crazy around there and dangerous.

even however i comprehend the actuality that funds isnt a difficulty, there is not any thank you to rigidity to the places you desire to bypass. there is not any parking for any of those. And its no longer purely constrained parking and you wont come across a niche, yet there is not any quite parking. there is purely one mall in long island and there isnt a parking spot for 3 blocks in any direction, so which you finally end up taking the bus besides. you may have a keenness all you like, yet a 20 minute shuttle on a prepare is a 2 hour shuttle via automobile, then upload an hour finding for parking.

Parking will cost maybe $40 a day, and driving around can be quite difficult if you are not familiar with the city. It would be cheaper and easier to walk and get cabs or use the subway (the subway can be difficult to understand for tourists, but not impossible).

Leave your car at home! Get yourself a subway map.
The city subway is a wonderful way to get around and it is ALOT less hassle than the outrageously priced parking.

DO NOT BRING YOUR CAR!
Tons of $$$ just to park it and you won't drive it anywhere. Walking and taxi's are the way to go - no doubt!
I'd look inot going via train vs. bus
