Depends on which religion you are talking about. If you are talking about Buddhism, yes, self will and the will of a higher power are not mutually exclusive, in fact, self will is above all encouraged, within the confines of moderation of course. You must be in tune with yourself before you are in tune with God in my opinion.

No, because self-will is pride (telling God you can do it better than Him) and for God to have His will done, pride must be gone.
