I certainly don't assume this. I know at least several athiests that have read the Bible. Why do you assume that "religious people" assume this? ;)

I have two bibles. One was given to me at birth, and I have no idea where the other came from. They are right next to all of my other 'religious' books. I treat them as reference books, as I do ALL of the other textbooks/novels/etc. I own. (My bible's are actually in between a college "Religions of the World" textbook, and a small "Wicca" book. Reference purposes only!
Too often, Christians think that we are not Christian because we have not read and learned their teachings. It seems they may even think that books like that would be banned from our homes or burned before they got to the doorway.
I'm not assuming that every Atheist has a bible or has read one; I will assume that educated Atheists do or have. Most Atheist grow up in a religious world and then decide it's all BS. In my opinion, if one doesn't believe in 'god' (or anything), that person must first know who/what 'god' is in order not to believe.
Many things said in the bible are contradictory. So when a person throws a verse at you, do a little research and throw a contradictory verse right back at the person if you like. It may help them learn that most Atheists aren't ignorant.
To Add - I agree with Fred.

>>>I asume that religious people asume this because of the way they answer questions with copy and pasted sections of the bible for me to read.<<<
No offense, but that is not a valid reason for assuming that religious people believe atheists haven't read the Bible.
After all, we cite Bible verses for people for many reasons -- in many cases, even for fellow Christians.

Maybe we have met far too many people who have rejected the Bible and haven't read it. I had a professor who bragged about how he had never read the Bible, but had read all about the Bible from other sources and explained how that was good enough for him to decide what he believed about it. Such an educated man--ha! I asked him if it would be okay if I read all about Shakespeare's works and used that to make up my mind about them without reading the works themselves, but of course, that would be a TERRIBLE thing!
I have met many "educated" people who reject the Bible but have never read it. I have met only a few Atheists who have read enough of the Bible to have an intelligent conversation about it.
And the even tougher truth . . I don't even assume that people who claim to be "Christians" have read the Bible. To argue the other side, too many people say they "believe" the Bible without having read it. There are far too many who say they believe and can't carry on an intelligent conversation about the Bible.

Good question. Most atheists are more knowledgable about the Bible than most Christians. In fact, many atheists strayed from Christianity because of actually taking the time to read the entire Bible for obvious reasons.

I am a Christian- and I believe that some atheists have read the Bible- reading the Bible is different than believing it and living it.

Because they have read it, sure, not the whole thing but at least a few of their favorite verses and they know it is real because they can "just feel it" not to mention they have been told it is true since they could understand words, so if you had read it you would just know too and they just can't understand why someone doesn't think exactly like them when it makes so much sense to them.

Because if you had truly read the bible, then the wondrous and obvious truth of it would surely have made you a believer!
(That is if you maybe skipped over all the many obvious self-contradictions, gaping logic holes, outlandish claims of the supernatural and horrific violence perpetrated by God...)

when you read the bible do you understand meaning of what was written in the BIBLE.
reading the bible is one thing reading, understanding and following its something different that most non-believers still have to comprehend.
