I have been in the process of looking for an apartment and 90% of them expect pet owners to pay $20 - $50 extra a month in pet rent. Isn't it enough that we already pay a pet deposit.

I don't have a problem paying the pet deposit because I can get that back if no damage is done, it's the pet rent that bothers me the most.

I agree. Seems a little silly that these same people will rent to folks with kids, doesn't it?? When we had rental property I always allowed pets AND kids. Long story short, none of the pets ever drew on the walls, started a fire or vandalized the neighbors car. I quit renting to people with kids! Sometimes it seems we're punishing the wrong species.

They say we mostly have to pay the deposit usually to secure the premises etc which I think is a load of rubbish cause we still have to pay the rent no matter what, not like we get it back the following month or anything, well it was like that for me.
As for the pets they know a lot of people will not allow pets so they think they can charge what they want, they know that if we love our pets & want them with us that we have to pay for them as extra. Know exactly were your coming from on that one

unfortunately so many have learned by inconsiderate owners of the damage that can be done.
I am a pet lover an I have many and have had many different types of animals but if I rented I would also charge the extra sorry to say.
Sorry but there are just so many people that own animals and don't control them and it makes it bad for all.
I feel the same about Pitt bulls just because some are bad they are now almost all considered to be bad before it was GSD, then Dobies,Rotties etc it's all due to the few that are bad that effects all.
Well Good Luck.

That is wrong....I mean geez....They owners probably have a pet. We live in an apartment and since last year they started putting a $50 dollar rent deposit for each pet you have in your home, but we don't have to, because we have lived in the apartments since they were built :)

Your dogs may not be the type to destroy but the owners of the apartments have had experience with this so they attach an extra fee to be able to replace carpet or fix doors or repair something a dog tore up.

I have not had to go find a place to live since I have dogs cause I have lived in a house & now I own it. But, I have know many apartment dwellers with pets & they feel the same as you.

I have been very fortunate cause I have had lots & lots of dogs.

I totally understand how you feel, but it's fair to remember the position of the place renting to you. They don't know your animal, don't know if it's had any formal/proper training and no idea if the animal is properly house broken. It's a risk they take with each and every pet they permit in their rental unit that the animal could be destructive. They don't have the time to individually evaluate each and every potential dog resident to determine if the dog is good tempered and properly trained, so it's easier for them to add the cost to the renter and compensate for the risk.

Most places have likely ended up this way from getting burned at one point in time or another. One bad apple is all it takes to ruin it for everyone else, even those of us who are responsible owners.

Again, I understand your feelings and it doesn't seem fair, but it's only fair to try to see this from the view of those taking a risk by allowing pets in their rental units in the first place.

i agree with Shadow Melon...every apartment owner takes a risk in having pets. If a pet messes up any part of the apartment, the owner has to pay for it. So they take it out of every person who owns a dog just in case they need to repair something from a pet's mistake.

I think it stinks I have ti choose places that will be fun for the kids and allow me to take my dog Pete. He goes ever where we go. It is the pet owners that do not give a damn enough about there pets to train them and love them that is making us good guys have a hard way to go. Why do they choose to become pet owners if they do not want the responsibility? Sorry I vented on you

I was having that same problem. If your dog doesn't do any damage and if you clean up after him/her well. You get most if not all of it back. Just talk to them. If they get to know your dog and like him they might waive the extra 20-50 per month altogether.
