No, it was rude of them to be late. Unless of course, they called and told you they would be late and you said it was ok.

You need to make an agreement with the person before you babysit. In that agreement include how much you charge per child per hour, what time you are expecting the parent to be home, and any additional charges you will charge after a certain time. Also let the parent know if you have any commitments that make it impossible for you to stay beyond a specified time. Be clear up front, and you don't have to worry about being rude.

Most conflicts in life come from unclear expectations and the confusion, disappointment, and frustration that accompanies them. Be clear, and you'll both know what to expect.

No. It's rude of the person you're sitting for to come home really late.

Charge by the hour, but if you charge a flat fee per day, make it known that you charge extra for a set amount of time late. How do they not know you don't have somewhere to be?

Do u mean extra on top of your hourly rate just b/c they came home at a later hour than normal? Then yes, it's rude, u should only get paid for the time u worked, not extra on top of it. But if u just mean charge extra for the extra hours u worked, then no, it's not rude to ask for five hours of pay if u worked for five hours instead of three. Regardless of whether they came home right after dinner or at 2 AM, that's what u were there for!

Not at all. In fact you should charge by the hour, that way if you're asked (or forced) to stay longer than you intended you will be compensated for your extra time and work.

Not rude at all, but you should charge by the hour. In addition, make your rules up front and clear so that there are no surprises. You'll find that folks will appreciate your professionalism.

Good luck!

It is not rude, it is very rude and inconsiderate on their part to return late, specially if they don't call. If they are late you could charge them an hourly fee for the extra time.

Not at all. Start charging by the hour if you don't already, and you can definitely have an "overtime" fee.

Perfectly legit. You have to stand up for yourself or they will walk all over you.

It's business, not personal.

For this reason, it is best to charge by the hour. You can tell the parents the rate before hand, and then safely know that you will get a fair price.

I would charge by the hour, but let them know the price beforehand. If they are late, they should not argue about paying more than they previously expected.
