Army says cut off age is 42

The Army is again considering extending the deployment time of our Troops.

My question is would you enlist to shorten the time our Troops have to spend in the sandbox?

I would today even with my previous service time taken off, I'm over the age limit.

Additional Details

Those of us that can pull our weight and are willing should be allowed to do so, whether it be in a office here or just guarding supplies in the sandbox to fighting as long as we can pass muster!

I think that the military should consider allowing old timers to re-up in a limited capacity. We could do non-combat support work to free up the young warriors.

There is plenty of data processing, paperwork, driving, inventory work etc. that does not require quick reflexes, sharp eyesight or lots of stamina.

What the heck, even people who never served could be useful. Right now I am serving in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. We do many of the same things the Coast Guard does including Search and Rescue, manning radios in Coast Guard Stations, Public Safety Education etc. Some of the most active members are over sixty years old.

They can answer phones or process paperwork just as well if not better than young recruits. The difference is that we volunteer to do this work. It is a force multiplier. The Coasties we free up can be put to better use fighting drug smugglers, enforcing maritime laws and securing the ports.

The Coast Guard Auxiliary has been in existance providing this service since 1936. Why can't other armed services use it as a model to do something similar?

First of all, thank you for serving. I agree that there are many jobs that could be filled by those over the cutoff age, particularly in rear detachment. From what I understand, certain personell can be enlisted over the 42 year old cutoff age, particularly JAG and Medical. I'm not for sure on this, will have to ask hubby (Recruiter). Good luck with the contractor job...you will definately want to be in shape if you go.

I spent 22 plus years in the Air Force, and had I had the chance, I would have stayed in for another 8, but at the time, with the reduction in forces, that wasn't possible. Today, I think I'm way too old and way too out of shape to even fit in a uniform any longer, let alone do anyone any good.

The President and congress really should address this but they have all abdicated their responsibility to Americas finest. Recruitment efforts need to be increased or alternative options should be looked at---like taking the able bodied and willing professionals. Congress is currently trying to shut down private security firms that supplement our troops due to lack of oversight and control. If they do that they need to come up with alternatives but they never seem to. Once again the political class betray the Red White and Blue.

i advance into attempting to enlist, yet began to be stricken by an ailment. that could disqualify me from transforming into a member of. i could enlist in a minute if I have been to be waiting to, even in a "help" potential is high-quality with me. Too undesirable the armed forces won't take circumstances which incorporate mine into attention.

I like the idea. Really, I'm retired now but I would go back on active duty today to help ease the load on the kids serving today. Many of the guys down at the Legion post would as well, although most of them in my Post are WAYYY too old! But age doesn't end dedication to community, state and nation. Too bad so many of the young people blogging here have no care for anyone other than themselves. (most of them are liberals. nuff said.)

Yes, in fact I think that one of the things they can do is take "out of shape" guys like you and I and put us in non-combat support units freeing up "better" men to fight. I do not like the idea of sending young guys to fight but old men need to face the fact that they are better at it then us and the best thing we can do is give them as many men on the ground as possible.

MOST Republicans wouldn't

They say how righteous this war is
BUT
are they signing up to go themselves NO
are they getting their kids to sign up NO

You'd think with all of their reteric regarding the righteousness of this war we'd have too many trying to enlist,
instead we have overextended stays for those that got swindled into joining not knowing they'd be dying for oil
