Why does the Schnauzer have that mustache and eyebrows that they are known for? Its not to make them look more mature.
It had a perpus at one time.

What is the function of the haircut? Remember the haircut carried over to the Giant. But the Standard was the first. Also other Terriers like the Scotty, Wire Fox and Wheaton have simular dues. So there is a purpose for the Classic Schanuzer cut.

I believe the real reason as to why these dogs have a beard and eyebrows is because they are avid rodent hunters. It protects them from getting bitten from their prey. They were also used as cattle dogs but I really don't see the purpose in the beard and eyebrows for that other then the eyebrows would act as a sun protectant. We had a Schnauzer when I was younger and he was always on rodent patrol on our farm. Well he would dig in the bales, ground, and squeeze through tiny holes to get to the rodents. Well we took him to a different groomer one time and she shaved off his beard and groomed him like a cocker spaniel well because of that he ended up getting scratches and bite marks all over his face because of his natural instinct to burrow for rodents. The hair is a way of protecting them.

Why the hair? Because they are originally wiry haired pinchers. In 1879, the winner of the first show in which the then named Wirehaired Pinschers were exhibited was named Schnauzer. He was such a superior animal that his name became generic for the entire breed. It was a most suitable name too, because in German the word, Schnauze means "muzzle" or "face" especially pointing out the hallmark beard and mustache.

Schnauzer: The name Schnauzer comes from the German word for moustache because of the dogs' distinctively furry noses.

schnauzers: There are three types of schnauzers; The Giant, the standard, and the miniature. The word 'schnauze' means muzzle in german. The schnauzer has a thick moustache on its muzzle. The schnauzer's history can be traced back to the sixteenth century in Germany.

i am not sure about that but i researched and nothing told me. but i do know that it got its name from "Schnauze" meaning "Snout" and the dog was named because of the beard on the muzzle. It was first recognized in the 1800s and there isnt any info before that time that says 'why' it has a beard.
