Truthfully, it probably doesn't help that if you are a neutral bystander you have to deal with being barraged by numerous different and conflicting opinions of what religion even is. You run into extremists on all sides and from all religions. You run into different preachers and books telling you to believe different things. Everything is open to interpretation.
Now, I am a Christian. Just want to throw that out there so you know. Personally, though, I think the best thing you can do is this:
1. Forget about religion and what religion is and trying to believe in religion. That will likely just lead you around in circles. It's like trying to find the starting point of a circle.
2. Meditate or pray every day. If you believe in God, you can pray to him. If you do not, then just meditate. Find somewhere quiet and sit down and think. Relax. Fix on your inner self. Think about who you are and what you want to be. Think about your problems and the problems in the world, and think about what you can do to make things better. Don't try to solve all the world's problems! That is impossible. But concentrate on what YOU can actually do to make your life and the lives of around you better. Take some time every day to reflect on what is good in your life and life in general.
3. Just try to be the best person you can. Do good to everyone around you. Try not to be selfish or greedy. Help those in need. Be a good friend, sister, daughter, and co-worker. It can be little things, like holding the door open or just saying a kind word. It can be big things like listening to someone when they are sad or helping them to move. Try to keep a positive attitude about life and focus on what you are doing to make your life better.
You do these things, and you'll find your religion. Maybe it will be Christianity, and may it won't. If you don't, then you will still have lived your life to the fullest. That is all religion is about anyway!

You want to believe in religion because you feel it will make you a better person. But you just cannot believe in religion because doing so would be playing the role of a hypocrite—one that says one thing, yet does the opposite. Many Christians criticize others for not going to church or believing in Jesus Christ. However, they are hypocrites because they are sinners like anyone else—cheaters, liars, thieves, and murderers. I do not honestly believe that anyone is perfect, not even God.
Believe it or not, many Christians are actually worse than non-religious people. The Bible states “Love thy neighbor,” which means to have respect for one who is different than you. However, there are many Christians who dislike homosexuals, holding signs in public that read, “God hates fags!” Also important to mention are that many innocent children (primarily boys) have been molested by priests. People are taught to hate gays, yet studies show that only 10% of child molesters are homosexual and 90% are heterosexual.
Some people believe that religion makes a person much better. But in reality, religion has created more problems than solved. Religion would be a good answer why the United States is fighting in Iraq. Just to let everyone know, I am non-religious—I believe there is a god, but choose not to pick a religion—and totally disagree with the war in Iraq. Nobody should have the right to gamble another person’s life.

Why believe in what is basically a load of lies and fantasy, read Richard Dawkins book The God Delusion. I was an atheist long before starting to read this book but it should convince anyone who can think for themselves that there is no such thing as god and that religion is the worse thing on Earth, this is any religion not just Christianity or Islam All religion.

Stop trying to believe in religion and start looking into the evidence for God. Religion is man's attempts to be good enough for God. Relationship with God is entirely different. There are churches that promote relationship rather than religion. Those are the ones that understand why people doubt and what the answers are for that doubt.

Nothing wrong with doubting - it's perfectly understandable. In fact, God wants us to engage our intellects, not just swallow up anything and everything other people say or claim.
Since the question is WHY do I WANT to believe, can I suggest it's because we are created in God's image and that we have a deep-seated need to get to know, understand and love our creator. It's perfectly natural.
To make the task easier, why don't you go straight to the top and put this question to God? He never turns away anyone who genuinely seeks. Ask him to put you in touch with genuine Christians. Ask him for help. He knows you and he cares for you. I did and he didn't disappoint!

Perhaps the religion you're trying to believe in is a little naive. The main cause of agnosticism is that people never develop beyond the nursery version of religion they are taught when they are young. Try looking for something a little more challenging.

Is it religion you want to believe in? Religion is a man made institution to worship their concept of God and control a following. God or whatever you wish to call it is found within yourself and others. It is that which binds us together and leads us to make great sacrifices for people we don't even realize that we know. It is a source of great power that we can find in all living things.
I would not search for religion but rather for the personal Truth that lies within you. Do not try to compromise your beliefs to fit into keyhole. Yet do not hold to much attachment to your beliefs that they can not grow and add further truth. Make your truth your religion.
I'm sorry your additional details came in while I was typing. But still my answer holds for me. I do love the teachings of Christ. But the religions that use these teaching in opposition to Christ's true teaching have no value for me.

Is it possible that the beliefs and practices you have had explained to you don't add up?
Perhaps you see through the lies.
Christendom teaches alot of un-truths.
Jesus said:
"Broad and spacious is the road leading off into destruction, and many are the ones going in through it, whereas narrow is the gate and cramped the road leading off into life, and few are the ones finding it." Matthew 7:13,14
It would seem we should not look to the large, established religions for any good.
Look for a small group of sincere people and see if they have something that motivates you.

I think you should may to try learning about all religions. You doubt maybe because there are a lot of believing. How can you to be sure of your believing if you don't know others possibility's? I think it's important to search truth and when you find it, you don't doubt any more!
Excuse me for my English but I'm learning. Thanks

It's obvious. Everyone would LIKE to believe there's a nice God out there, life has meaning, we're not going to really die when we die, it's all going to work out in the end. But those with the ability to face life for what it is and have the courage to look at reality and accept it, they know that they can't believe in something that isn't there, no matter how comforting it may seem. It's hard, but at least you know you have stuck to the truth, and that's the best you can do.
