Call or talk to your boss on Friday (give enough time so she can find someone to fill in) and say "I have a person issue that needs to be attended to immediately". If she needs you to go into details, just say that you are not comfortable discussing it, and that it is a personal issue that be rectified and will not resurface or cause issues in the future it taken care of immediately. Good luck!

You don't need an excuse. You need a sense of responsibility.

Your boss needs you for three hours on Saturday. Out of respect for your boss and your desire to get a paycheck, you should go in. If 3 hours is "hardly worth it," ask for a longer shift.

(I personally can't think of any job where 3 hours isn't enough time to do something productive.)

If you have a long commute, let your boss know you can't make it for such a short time, but let her know in advance. For this Sat, you probably have to suck it up and go.

I have a 1 1/2 hour commute each way and I've always told my boss I won't work for less time than my commute is, occasionally he needs people for just 1 or 2 hours but that'd be totally out of whack with both the time and cost spent on the train tickets. He totally understood so he doesn't ask me if he has such short shifts, then he finds one of my colleagues who lives closer to work.

Well we work 1/2 days on Friday and its really not even worth coming in because of the gas prices. Just say it like it is, do you really need to come in for 3 hours and be taxed half of what you make for 3 hours? Suck it up and GO IN!

Here's a thought - just be "responsible" and go to work. Or tell the truth...

"no outrageous or immature answers! " - So don't ask an outrageous or immature question!

Can you tell her that you have company from out of town coming in? Or do you maybe have to go out of town for a family reason? Does your car need serviced? Did your tire go flat and the spare was flat?

If you are already scheduled then you need to go in. Responsibility.

If she is asking you to come in on an unscheduled day you simply say I'm sorry but I have plans.

"I have a prior commitment." That's all you need to say. If your boss asks you to elaborate say, "I'm sorry, it's personal." They should (and need to) butt out at that point.

BTW, if this is your career, you may want to rethink this & go in on Saturday. Team players get ahead.

Tell them that you had an unexpected visit from a family member that you don't get to see very often, and they'are only going to be in town on Saturday.
