Butter, believe it or not. There is something in the fat of butter (not margarine, mind you) that dilutes the properties of the pitch.

It helps after you've cut down your Christmas tree, and need to get the pitch off your hands.

I can guarantee that Lectric shave ($3. a bottle at any drugstore in the shaving section) will work but I am not sure if the smell or ingredients will bother the horse. I would try witch hazel. It has therapeutic properties and won't hurt skin in any way.

Use rubbing alcohol (it pulls the moisture out and crystalizes it and it will break loose) on something like a stiff toothbrush and then rinse well.

I would get a professional groomer to come and cut it out or call one and see if there is some type of shampoo or conditioner you could buy to get it out with.

bleach? cutting? no way! I've also heard that butter gets it out cause it will slide right off! try that first and THEN consider cutting. How would bleaching help? It gets rid of color, not things!

Is it really sap or have you been doing something naughty with your horse? Either way bleach will take it right out
