My boss's birthday is on July 4th. She is the worst person in the world. If you've ever seen Devil Wears Prada, she is like the character of Meryl Streep, except my boss is 10 times worse than her and my boss have no fashion sense whatsoever. My boss is cheap, mean, ugly and overall not a good person. Am I still obligated to get her a gift or a card? The last two years I've been her assistant, she's never given me anything for my birthday. I've never even had a raise. She's made me cry several times when she yells and makes me feel stupid. Most times I come home depressed.

She makes a lot of dough, (6 figures) but she is cheap. She is a widow, no kids. She got more money from life insurance (about a million) when her mom and husband died. I think her husband decided to end his life than to spend his life with her. hehe

I'm the only one who works for her. I do work for another person, which is her business partner and this guy is the nicest boss. He doesn't like her either but she is good in the business and pays half the office rent so he keeps her around. And yes, I am going to go job hunting soon! I'm staying around because I want the experience and I haven't found anything yet.

You'd be showing great class to get her a card. Despite her awful behavior toward you, you would be extending an olive branch. She may throw it back at you, but just remind yourself that she must be mighty miserable to be so rude.

She must be a very unhappy person to make your life so miserable, and she certainly sounds like an inept manager. Sorry you have to suffer through that on a daily basis! If you are not alone in the office, or if your boss supervises more than one person, get a card and ask others to sign it with you. Perhaps that will help you feel less insincere. And who knows. Maybe it will cheer her up a little and help diffuse the tension, and as the other poster said, there is nothing wrong with taking the high road. However, I would avoid anything too funny, mean, age-related, or mushy; just a simple dignified card wishing her a happy birthday. Meanwhile, try posting your resume on Monster.com or some of the other job boards. You're bound to have a happier life elsewhere! Good luck!

I would simply say, "Happy Birthday" and leave it at that. Reason being that she hasn't earned anything more. And, since she's never given a card to you on your birthday it's more than likely that she's not expecting one for hers.

Also, unless she's oblivious to her actions, she probably knows that she's done nothing to deserve anything more a "Happy Birthday." If you gave her a gift, it might even come off as insincere, which it pretty much would be. A card is borderline.

Now, an extra 2¢: Why are you working for anyone who obviously doesn't respect you or value your work? Life's too short!

No. You are dancing with a dragon personality and you won't win. If you can't find a new job than keep going to work but don't go out of your way on your personal time for her. No errands and certainly no gifts or cards for holiday's and birthdays.

You need to just ignore the day as she does for you. Two wrongs don't make a right but in this case the most you should do is send an email greeting card.

Good luck and get job hunting!!!!!!!!!!!!

As my Mother always said, 'two wrongs do not make a right.' Get her a card and wish her a Happy Birthday. You're a better person for doing so and it can't hurt your career. No need to buy a gift -- a card will suffice.

She need the see your love the most when she does not deserve for it. You can build a better relationship by giving a gift. You give not because you are obliged but you want to show your love for her and care for her though she may not be the nicest person for you in the past.
Remember, love conquers all.
She's won't get mad by receiving a gift from you.

I would just get her a card that says Happy Birthday. That's it.
