I really want to get the taste of Burbon St. and what its all about but I don't want to stay in a dump to do so. Any suggestions on nicer hotels. Also any suggestions for entertainment and food.

Ok, I'd recommend the Royal Sonesta hotel in the 300 block of Bourbon. Actually, there is nothing on Bourbon Street that you cannot find in other major cities and towns--it's all bars, strip joints, and tacky souvenir shops. The only thing on Bourbon Street worth seeing is the little jazz park in the 200 block which has statues of Pete Fountain, Al Hirt, and I think, Fats Domino. There are plenty of good places to eat in the French Quarter; there is Remoulade, right across the street from the Sonesta. Seafood quite prevalent in New Orleans, and there are also plenty of Creole restaurants, like Oliviers. You have to go to Cafe du Monde for the beignets and cafe au lait at Jackson Square--it's open 24/7. Arnauds restaurant is one of our famous ones, located on Bienville. St. New Orleans restaurants are known for their food! It's hard to make a mistake dining-wise in New Orleans. If you are looking for simpler fare, I'd suggest Acme Oyster House on Iberville St. Head to Central Grocery on Decatur Street, a few blocks past Jackson Square, and get a muffelatta. If there's at least 2 of you, get a half muffelatta--they are quite large. A whole one will feed 3-4 people. Mother's Restaurant is a very popular choice, located outside the Quarter on Poydras Street.
But really, there is nothing special about Bourbon Street, trust me.

If you want to sit on a balcony and watch the "action" of Bourbon Street, you're limited to the Royal Sonesta Hotel, Bourbon Orleans or the Inn on Bourbon.

Although if you want a great B&B that is one block from Bourban that has nice large suites and a great pool I would recommend Maison DuBois Bed and Breakfast.

You have your "economy" hotels, four-star nice mainstream hotels and your local "on the street" type hotels--all within walking distance of Bourbon Street. Measure of common sense will be of great help here. Look carefully and make your best choice.
