When you use a bullet weight are you supposed to tie the weight on or just let it sit on the line on top of the bait so it would be able to slide up and down on the line ?

It kind of depends on what you're doing. I always peg the weight if I'm fishing vegetation and heavy cover and don't want it weight to slide or hang on anything. I also always peg when flipping. In open water, bedding areas, etc. I never peg. I think it makes for a little better presentation in open water and it's harder for the fish to throw the hook. For pegging, you can either use something as simple as a toothpick, or I've been using these really cool Parasite clips which work very well, link below. BTW this all applies to Texas rig.

Hey Kevin, the weight is designed to have the main fishing line run through it allowing the weight to slide. You need to tie on a swivel snap below it and then attach your liter to the bottom of the swivel snap. That way, the weight still slides but doesn't slide down and disturb your bait. Some people also use a split shot below instead of working a swivel snap into to keep it from touching the bait. I like swivel snaps because I set up my riggings before hand at home that way I can easily change them out when I fishing so I can find which rigging works best for that day and situation. Hope this helps..

No, you are not supposed to tie it on. You are supposed to thread it through the main line, then tie on a swivel to stop it from sliding down to the hook. Or the other way around, thread the sinker then contain it with swivel so it doesn't slide down the main line. Use a leader of about 18-24 inches.

That depends on the type of fish in the water where you are. If you tie it down, it will sink further in the water and thus, weigh the bait down further in the water. That's important if you are trying to catch fish that are bottom dwellers. But some fish like wading to the top so in that case, letting the weight sit on top is okay.

A bullet weight is supposed to slide. However, different types of fishing methods would dictate how much you want it to slide and where you want the weight to stop sliding.

Depends of the situation you are in.
Heavy structure, such as Lilly pads, trees, stumps, etc. I always peg mine.
Any other situation, such as rocks, slopping points, drops, etc. I let it slide.

All in all just like anything else in fishing its a " PERSONAL" preference and what you feel "Confident" in.

both ways work, but it is designed to "slide" on the line, However, you need to attach a small split shot or knot to keep it from sliding up to the hook and fouling it.
