John F. The pillars is talking about the core of the earth (ie: inside) not hanging on....
This scripture specifically predicts that the earth was suspended in space long before scientists came up with it some 2000 years later.

Those who do study the bible know that Jesus spoke in parables and there are reference for instance milk and wine, milk refering to nurishment and wine refering to healing agent (the alcohol in it) you really need to study it not just read it like as if it were written in these times with our broadend language. Realize that things are not the same now by any means... it needs to be studied

I think scientists are still trying to figure it out. I have watched many doumentaries on the Discovery Channel where scientist try to prove things like the parting of the Red Sea was caused by a tremendous earthquake. Too many people are still trying to prove that God does not exists. All they have to do is look around them.

or Samual 2:8 . . . for the pillars of the earth are the LORD's, and he hath set the world upon them.


The Egyptians had worked out that the Earth was a ball before these words were ever written down. They even went on to get the size right to about 5%

Scientists have not figured this out, because it isn't true. If you want to get technical, the earth is suspended "over" the sun via the sun's gravitational pull. The northern skies can logically spread only over the northern hemisphere, until they become southern skies. No part of the sky spreads over empty space. The Bible isn't a book of interpretive scientific facts, and I do see any reason why it should be. Let it be about religion and spiritual experience. The lessons need not be factual to be true.

The Egyptians and Greeks both knew that the earth was round and suspended by nothing well before Job was written.
Presumably, the quote in Job about the earth being suspended over nothing is a religious explanation for previously known scientific phenomena.
Scientists figured it out BEFORE Job was written.

There's no "scientific" knowledge in the bible that wasn't already common knowledge at the time it was written, and the gross errors it DOES contain (claiming that bats are "fowl", that humans could build a tower out of clay bricks that would reach all the way up to the "dome" of the sky where Joe Hovah walks around, blaming mental illness on demonic possession, etc.) are more than enough to completely discredit it as a source of factual information....

'spreads out the northern skies over empty space' means the skies extend off the edge of the world.

'he suspends the earth over nothing' is a new translation to me. I believe it was 'hangs the earth on nothing', wasn't it? Which means they thought that earth had to be hung in place to prevent it falling.

In other words: typical, utterly incorrect bronze-age thinking.

The earth is not suspended - it moves around in an elliptical orbit due to gravity.,

Again, the bible has is wrong. In addition to the bible saying the earth is flat, has four corners, and is supported by columns, it also uses this phrase to describe the earth.

To answer your question, scientists did not "figure out" this fallacy.

There is a place in the North where no stars exist , which cannot be seen with the naked eye. How did the writer of Job know this? Also, the same verse declares that God hangs the earth on nothing. We know this is true, but we have only known it for about 350 years. God's inspired writer told us over 3000 years ago that the earth is held in place by gravitational forces!
