Actually, I've always likened people's "relationship with Jesus" to Battered Wife Syndrome -- he tells you over and over how you're unworthy and inherently bad, he threatens you with infinite punishment if you argue with him or don't do as he says, yet like sheep they blindly rush to his defense, insisting "But he LOVES me!"
