p at the end means progressive scan. i at the end means interlaced.
Interlaced means that alternate lines (all the odd numbered or all the even numbered lines) are transmitted, so the freuqnncy of sending a picture can be doubled for the same bandwidth.
720 p and 1080i are used in most countries for HDTV. 1080p would give a better definition.

780p and 980p I've never heard of. Probably Yank standards.

To try and simplify this, keep in mind that the number represents lines of resolution. The more lines, the more space it occupies on your screen, creating a denser, sharper picture. The letters, either "i" or "p" represents how the picture is projected. "i" means interlaced where the lines shift from odd numbered lines to even numbered lines. "p" means progressive scan where the lines are swiped all at once from top to bottom. The arguement is that Progressive scan is better but to most people, they can't tell with the naked eye.

The "in" thing right now is 1080p because 1080 lines of resolution is the maximum amount of lines, for now, you can project and progressive is the favored method of projecting these lines. However, you must have a television capable of doing this. Most tv's will do 780p or 1080i and only recently has a slew of 1080p's come out. Set your Xbox360 to 1080i since it is the maximum lines of resolution. Although it's interlaced and not progressive, I doubt that you will be able to tell the difference.

well most hdtv's can output to 720p and 1080i. the numver before the letter is the last number of the resolution. like 720p is 1280x720 progressive. more expensive tv's can output to 1080p.
