Louise, sometimes frustration builds and it needs a release. While one can never win an argument with a wall, keeping rage bottled up inside can be far worse. It is the people who are always in control that never relaease strong emotions that will eventually snap. If one feels rage and pressure and has no outlet for it, the end is an explosion in which someone will get hurt. I worry more about the people who do not express feelings and agree that if all that is there is a wall, the instant the hand hits the wall the rage is usully gone. That is because pain has replaced it and he now has something else to think about. I used to give my kids a pillow to beat up and give them the concept that anger is a normal reaction to dissapointment. Denying feelings lead to worse consequences. ANger and rage must have a release. I think that if he does that he is going to be more likely to siscuss his feelings with you and you have a far better chance to resolve them. Let me suggest a gym, they usually have bags designed to be punched.

It's a way to release anger other than hitting someone. I don't punch walls or cause any damage, but when I get enraged, I always find something to take my anger out on besides a person. It does not mean I want to hit a person, as I would NEVER do such a thing. It's just a way to release anger.
But that's me. There are some very violent people. If he is punching holes in walls and being destructive, lose him.

Most men do this because we have a hard time expressing our feelings (anger) because it's not as easy for us to vocalize our feelings (due to lack of vocabulry mostly) so the only thing that we can think of at the time is to hit something (not you), I admit that this is not the smartest thing to do but no one said that men are always the smartest people...lol

When guys get upset they produce testosterone, which in turn makes them angry. It is not that they really want to hit you, but they need to release some of the energy that has built up extremely fast. The best thing you can do, is walk away quickly and not say a word. If he would ask where you are going then tell him that you are just giving him some time to cool down.

it doesnt mean that they want to hit you, men just get really frustrated when in an argument, punching the wall is a way of venting that anger

Releases anger and expresses more than words can about his level of frustration with the situation or you. Instead of hitting you he hits something else, even something that hurts him.

My exhusband used to do that too. It was his way of releasing anger and agression without hitting me he said. I always thought it was kinda ridiculous...he even broke his hand once.
