Summer is almost here and temperatures are very high outside. I have a dog, croatian sheepdog (the pic: http://www.dogdomain.com/images/277_croatiansheepdog1.jpg)
and I keep him in the garden. He always lays in shadow but now the temperatures are 34°C even in the shadow so it is very very hot.
I give him a lot of cold water but i don't know is this enough to keep him refreshed. I tried to bathe him, but he doesen't like it.
What is the best way to refresh him and make him stand the heat?

Okay... first, don't shave your dog. The same hair that would keep him warm in winter actually helps to keep him cool... so shaving is a bad thing.

1st, you have to have some kind of dog house for him. It is against the law to have a dog outside with no appropriate shelter! We are talking fines here- money you could have just spent to get the dog house.

2nd, you need to do more than just provide water. Get a kiddie pool, and put water in... If your dog gets hot, he will get in...

3rd, there are all kinds of things you can - if your dog won't chew this up, there is a cooling bed you could get... Or the ICE thing....

There are also chamois cloth items you can make or buy that you can soak in water and put on your dog to help keep him cool.

None of these work nearly as well as keeping him inside if it is hot. YOu could always just get a crate and crate him up... But better to be in A/C. Dogs suffer heatstroke just like people and it is deadly.

I have never had a dog that I have left outside for prolong periods of time. My breed of choice is the boxer and due to their inability to breathe in temperatures over 70 degrees they are all inside dogs. To keep them cool, I have central air, have a kiddie pool which is filled and emptied several times a day so the water is always cool, I leave my sprinkler on all day and move it around for watering the lawn, so they love playing in that and they each have a cooling coat as well. I also have a fan in the kitchen so that if any of them seems to be having any difficulties I can put the fan on them to keep them from over heating. I wish I had an answer for you but I don't believe in leaving a dog outside 24/7, mine are family members that get the same treatment as we people with heat and air conditioning. Why is that she can not come in the house? ADD::: If she were better being outside then you wouldn't have asked this question in the first place. A pup that is brought up as an indoor dog would only be asking to go out to eliminate and for some play time they wouldn't be wanting to be left outside alone. The reason why the dog would not be used to being indoors is because of whoever the owners are not letting them in and being used to being nothing but a lawn ornament. So why exactly is it that the dog is not allowed in the house .. you avoided that question

Aww what a cute dog! well this is what I think you should do, keep him refreshed at all times. Keep him in cold water, not freezing water but cold fresh water. Because a dog gets hot easily as the weather gets hot. So put him near a fan that will give him enough air so he wont be hot. Air will help a hot dog. but dont make him run too much because then he'll get sweaty and only get more hotter. So dont keep him thirsty, make sure he drinks alot of water, and that you cool him off with a bit of water. Water spray bottles, help too. Good Luck! Adorable Dog! :]

I would have him shaved down to very short fur on his belly and chest , and get the rest of his coat thinned. Then have a kiddie pool with a few inches of water that should be changed every day, but minimally every other day. This way he can cool his paws in it and drink till his hearts content.
I have a cat that has to keep outdoors, and we run a battery operated fan for her during the hottest times of day.
If you have a dog house for him, make sure it is well ventilated and can have a cross breaze.
Someone else i know put the fan in the wall of the doghouse so it kept air moving in the doghouse.

Best of luck

You should make sure that he ALWAYS has water, and since it is 'so hot' where you live, you should also look into a good 'doghouse' ... and if you can get one that is 'insulated' so that it stays cooler inside than it is outdoors, that would be the 'best' one you could get. Be SURE that there are TWO HOLES so that any breezes can get into the doghouse ... and if it gets 'really cold' in the winter, you should also be able to 'totally close' one hole, and 'cover' the other with a piece of blanket, to keep him warm in the winter ... and to make it 'even better' you should set it on a 'pedestal' that has 'air' that goes under the house, for BOTH seasons.

Water should keep him hydrated for the most part, so that should be enough to keep him somewhat healthy. Take your dog inside the cool airconditioning every now and then to refresh him, he is your dog, he should be able to go inside of your home. You don't want him to get heat stroke, so maybe if it's really that hot, then make him an indoor dog for most of the summer.

Leave him inside in the air con. If you can't do that, give him a waddle pool. Just like us, if he has his four paws in cool water it will cool his body down through the main veins.

If he can be, shave him and leave him a small pool to lay in.

I'm in Australia and the temp where i am often gets a lot more than 34 degrees. I am a dog groomer and alot of people shave their dogs at the beginning of summer to let them be cooler if they have a thick coat. By the time winter comes around, they look great and have their winter coat to keep them warm.

try and keep him cool in the air con - heat exhaustion can be fatal!!

Buy a plastic kiddie pool & fresh water to drink. Our dog loves to be sprayed with the hose. Very cold and refreshing!

My dog LOVES her baby pool! Just buy a cheap plastic baby pool from a local store and fill it everyday with fresh cool water. Extra bonus! Throw in some ice cubes for your pup to play with in the pool. (This doubles as a toy/extra coolant)
Or you can buy a little sprinkler that attaches to your hose and let your dog go wild playing in it!

But honestly, your dog will be fine no matter what. Dogs hair helps them to stay somewhat cool. Be sure not to shave her though, they can get a sunburn!!!

May I suggest keeping him in the house? If you can't do that, I would buy a dog house for him for shade. That way he will stay hydrated with of course the help of water. Dog houses come in all sizes and shapes so you might have to look around until you find one that's perfect for you four-legged friend.
