I'm not being funny but my dad used to get diazepam for his sore back. Made him nice and relaxed for once also!

You should check this Sciatica Natural Treatment
http://cure-sciatica.info
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica. Try a reputable chiropractor ASAP!

Cold can often irritate a back condition. I suggest your husband starts swimming a few times a week. This will help loosen and strengthen the muscles. If he has access to a Jacuzzi that would really help relax the muscles.
He should go to a local pharmacy and purchase a back support. That's really going to help support the muscles throughout the day.
Every evening have him Take a hot bath with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts. Soak for 30 minutes. The Epsom salts will help eliminate the lactic acid that forms on the muscles from over exertion.
Massage an analgesic cream into the sore muscles.
Dehydration can cause severe pain in the muscles. I recommend you drink purified water mixed with mineral water 50/50. This will replace the minerals that are exiting your body continuously.
I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day.
500mg of calcium and magnesium, taken twice daily, can help with diminishing the pain.

There are so many different approaches to dealing with back pain...and different things work for different people. I have suffered with back pain for about 10 years, and have had 3 surgeries on my spine, including a fusion. Check out the book "The Back Doctor" sorry I don't know who it's by, but it's got lots of approaches to dealing and treating the pain! Good Luck to your husband! I know how hard it can be!

Probably just needs to strengthen his back. Try some water exercises. Go in a pool, in shoulder length depth and walk back and forth, this forces the back to straighten up and builds muscle.
