I am trying to get some advice on some fun places to take a 5 yr. old boy in NYC for 2 days. I live near NYC and know the Mahattan quite well, but wanted to get some advice from other people on where to take my son, July 5th and 6th. Depending on weather would think Natural History Museum and other surrounding things on the Upper West Side (IE. Central Park Zoo) and maybe Yankee game as I see they are in town during that time, but looking for ideas that are different then the norm. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

There is a monthly magazine called TimeOut New York for Kids - pick up a copy (or read it at the library or Barnes & Noble) - this is a magazine full of what to do in New York with kids. You can also check the weekly edition and look under "Kids". Find a listing of what's happening in the City that week for children. They also list events on line, but the magazine has more

They have restaurant recommendations for kids

The Staten Island Children's Museum has an ice cream cooking class for kids (I would have loved that)

There is also a Children's Museum in Brooklyn
If you go into Brooklyn, go into Coney Island - this is the last season of most of Coney Island before it's all torn down and the condos go up. If your son likes baseball, there is a minor league team, The Cyclones, that play at Keyspan Park - two blocks from Nathan's.

If you don't want to spend a fortune on a Broadway show, take your son to the New Victory Theatre on 42nd Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenue - their shows are for children - they give you a special booster seat so your little one can see everything - I love their shows.

Take him for a ride on the Staten Island Ferry - take pictures of him with the Statue of Liberty in the background - he will probably appreciate that when he's a little older. The ferry's fun and it's free.

The Children's Museum on the Upper West Side - and there are some interesting restaurants nearby. Alice's Teacup is fun

The real (original) Winnie the Pooh is on exhibit at the Donnell Branch of the Library (the library has an excellent music collection while you're there). They also have a wonderful Storytime hour - you'd have to check for the hours.

Do you think he'd like the Sony Wonder Lab? Four floors of interactive exhibits and games - and, it's free

Very nearby is FAO Schwarz - there's a huge clock and when you go to the back of it, it's an elevator - see the grand piano that was used in the movie "Big" - there are dancing shows on the piano all day long. Between the shows, you can dance on the piano - when your foot steps on a note, it plays. Lots more to see there - there's an ice cream parlor in the basement. You'd be right near Central Park - so much for children to do - the zoo, the carousel, fishing, boating.

Have a great time!

Wollman rink is converted into an amusement park during the summer (located on 59th street and 5 th ave). You can take him there. You can also take him to Chelsea piers. On 56th street and Madison ave (the Sony building) there is a muesuem called Sony Wonders; its a hands on muesuem where you can try out all the gadgets and will get a certificate at the end.
