Are they admitting they are moral relativists? They have said in other questions that polygamy was okay during the Old Testament days, but that God changed his mind and now it isn't anymore. Or, they say that it was a different culture and our modern culture should have different rules. That sounds like relativism to me.

Mugg, you're right about societies changing, but that's moral relativism.

JLCrit, let's pull out our Bibles to the Old Testament so we can read about the other guys who had multiple wives. It wasn't just Soloman. Lamech, Abraham, Jacob, David, and Solomon all practiced polygamy.

Good point! As a Mormon, I appreciate your question. :)
We believe that polygamy is okay when God commands or allows it. In the revelations given to Joseph Smith, it is apparent that God was not happy with David and especially Solomon's excesses regarding polygamy, but that he accepted Abraham, Jacob, and other biblical figures' plural wives. It is up to God to decide when it is acceptable and when it is not. While it may be for some Christians, in God's case this is not relativism. He commands it when he decides to. I think God usually asks his people to live in polygamy when there is a great need to raise up a people that will be willing to serve him in Truth. This certainly seems to have been the case with Abraham and Jacob/Israel.

If those are the answers they are giving you, then yes, that's relativism. The real answer is to read all the stories of polygamy that are in the old testament. Without exception, everytime there is more than one wife, there is an unhappy situation. Solomon was absolutely miserable, Leah and Rachel were sisters and turned against each other, etc. The real answer was that God was bringing these people up as a culture and teaching them that polygamy was not in His plan. Finally, Jesus came out and said one man and one woman. That settles the matter.

Hello and Never did God say Polygamy was okay in according to Heb.13:8 Jesus Christ [God] does NOT change, it was a custom that kings did it was not something God said was okay, sometimes God allows us our wrong choices but "with" the results, can you think of the "results" of having as many wives as Solomon did? www.itiswritten.com

Christians today live mainly according to the New Testament Ministry, where multiple marriages are not done.
If you want to refer to the old testament to support polygamy then you need to stop and go right back to the very beginning. God created adam and his wife eve as a standard. The Lord made it very clear regarding marriage and in solomon's case, it was these marriages which lead him astray and was his downfall.. so if you want to support polygamy by using a man's failure then you too will be in error.

The New Testament does not say plural marriage is ok. In the old days, they thought blood letting was hunky dory, Bar bars used to do it, that's why there sign has the red swirl on the post. Now we know different. In the old testament, women were thought of as animals, now we know different. The bible is gender biased. A book for male supremacists.

I don't really know why it would "wrong" today if for other reasons than it's not socially acceptable like it was back then...and it's illegal.
But from my point of view most people- Christians and non-Christians alike- manage to screw up marriage with just one spouse, I don't want to think about what it would be like with more than one.
Also I'm a Christian and probably a bit of a moral relativist, which isn't a bad word. Nothing's quite black and white.

did you ever read the part that Solomon and ONLY Solomon had many wives??? i guess not, but Solomon often had his wives killed or exiled. When one partner dies and you gain another is not consider polygamy. God says that marriage is a sacred bond between A man and A woman..Word: "A" which means one! We understand that, and yet you dont. Christians today follow Jesus Christ AND God, in the Old Testament, Jesus had no input. Christ explains marriage and he defines it bewteen 2 people. a man and a woman...REMEMBER! God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve!
But your logic is sadly flawed

They sound like people who change the rules to suit themselves. What did the new Testament say, "oh hail all ye Christians, amendment one, God has changed his mind" that would explain why so many Christians are confused. I seriously believe that, one has to accept the Bible as a whole, not the bits on wishes to accept, where is Gods signature to ascertain that it was he who made the changes.

At that time Kings had wives and lovers. It wasn't okay and Solomon isn't a good man yet God spoke to him. You know why? The Old Testament God was cruel and vindictive, not like Jesus at all.

You assume that polygamy being mentioned means it was ok with God. Those people were sinning and lessons were being taught...that's why those stories are there. One man and one woman is a marriage according to God and it's always been that way. God has not changed.
God Bless.
