Sedation will just make him sleepy or relaxed. In addition to the sedation they will still numb the area with Novacaine (novacaine, carbocaine, lidocaine- whatever they use) and he should be just fine. The sedation will make it easier for him and easier for them to get the job done quicker so he can resume his normal kid-stuff with you quicker :o)

This is the perfect question for me. I am 22 years old, and i am so nervous of dentists. But thanks to sedation, i lived through it. Heres how it works.

After they sedate you, they still numb the area which is going to be treated, the sedation actually calms you down. When they put the sedation through, its like the whole world seems blurry and like a dream.

The good thing about sedation is that after it is worn off, you dont remember a thing, although you are conscience throughout it! And there is absolutely no pain, whatsoever, trust me, i went through about 7 treatments all in a few months, and I feel great about it! I must have been the most scared dentistphobic or whatever you call it person, i was trembling in the chair when i first went, but all is well that ends well. i hope this is of good help. if you have any more questions, feel free to email me.

I'm a dental nurse so hopefully i will be able to help you on this question.
When your son is being sedated he will have a little needle inserted into either his arm or the back of his hand.
The drug administered will be a mild form of sedative, the most common one used is called Midazolam.
This will be inserted into the needle and this will then be titrated into his system.
Once this has been administrated your son will begin to feel slightly sleepy, the feeling is almost like having one to many beers, he will not be asleep, just a bit dozy, he will be able to hear everything that is being said to him and he will be able to respond to any thing said to him.
After the procedure your son wont actually remember anything, the drugs usually leave the system after a couple of hours, it's passed out when your son takes a pee.
It's worth remembering that sedation is not a form of pain relief and will only make your son feel relaxed.
Hope this has been of some help!

My 7 yr old granddaughter was sedated to have a tooth pulled. She was given something to drink that made her woozy. She said she felt drunk (LOL like a 7 yr old would know what being drunk feels like) She told me I fell asleep and when I woke up my tooth was out. She was fine. I took care of her the day of the extraction and just had her rest and watch TV. No pain or soreness, but had her rinse mouth after 24 hrs with warm salt water.

I am an alternative medicinal therapist and an ex nurse and i can tell you that you have nothing to worry about at all. If it is being done at a hospital They will give him a pre med, a mild sedative to relax him and an anti sickness pill. They may use penterthol but there is another that has less side effects, the name escapes me When he wakes up he will feel fine afterwards. My grandson, my daughter and myself have all had this. They may even use Valium a mild sedative.

I've been sedated around four times now. You don't feel any pain at all. He'll be fine please don't worry.
